Gegard Mousasi - the most underrated fighter

Mousasi is amazing. If Jones wasn't around I'd say he was a probably future LHW champ. He has a surprising number of haters considering his humble, inoffensive personality. People seem to resent someone they aren't familiar with getting praise of any kind. Anyone who actually knows how to analyze the technical details of fighting thinks highly of him.

He may have the best technical striking at LHW. He takes no damage in any of his fights. His defense both on the feet and the ground is top-notch. His ground game is among the best in the division. The taking no damage point is huge. It's one of the marks of a great fighter - guys who just are untouchable in terms of hurting them. RJJ, Sugar Ray Robinson, Anderson, GSP in almost all his fights, Fedor outside the Bigfoot fight, Jon Jones at the moment...these guys just don't get hurt. Now some great fighters take a lot of damage (Chuck, Wand, Big Nog, Rampage) but a large number of the all-time greats in boxing and MMA are very difficult to actually damage. It's a tremendously valuable attribute.

People who don't really understand MMA will hate on him for not finishing Jardine. But when a fight is totally non-competitive it isn't really that much of a black mark not to finish. GSP didn't finish Hardy, Anderson didn't finish Maia or Leites and might not have finished Cote. But all those fights were thoroughly non-competitive and the winners didn't have a scratch and were barely in any sort of trouble at any point. Same with this fight, Jardine literally did nothing to Mousasi outside a couple leg kicks. When a guy's defense/ability to limit damage is that good, it shows a lot.

It is the process you have to look at, not just the result. Process wise his performance was good - but could definitely have been better. Mousasi showed some holes and made some mistakes. He should've gone for takedowns earlier and he needs to improve his footwork/sprawl. How incredibly easily he was able to stand back up to his feet was impressive though, I think a lot of people don't understand what skill that showed.

his standup is absolutely fantastic and he's got a great attitude

but td defense is a gigantic hole to have in your game these days.

He's young so he has so much time to improve.

He has some tuning to do...very impressive though. He didn't look good in the King Mo fight IMO...he just doesn't seem to have a sense of urgency. Phone Post

Guess you missed the last few years of Mousasi fans declaring he was absolutely the next MMA God after Fedor.  Plus he has no wrestling.

One of my Fave fighters outside of the UFC hope Dana signs him soon. Mousasi vs Machida would be amazing

Im not a fan of thinking like "you are only as good as the competition you beat",because I think there definitely ARE fighters who are much better in reality than on paper, for example Mousasi and Overeem.

My personal opinion, but I think he beats Machida, Evans, Forrest.

I'm torn on his match-up vs. Shogun. I do believe he is a better technical striker than Shogun...but Shogun is tough and durable.

He can't wrestle, and he doesn't take a punch well, which is why his defense is so highly developed. In short, he's not underrated, he's just rated. Phone Post

rosario01 - Did you see the Jardine fight? LMFAO he couldn't finish a guy with a glass jaw Phone Post

Rampage and chuck couldn't knock jardine out Phone Post

He needs to drop back down to 185, he would own the division once Anderson retires.

Replace under with over and you got it Phone Post

He's fighting in the wrong division for his style. 205 has some HW sized wrestlers and I'd pick almost any of the ones at the top: Bones, Rashad, Bader over him. He'd fare much better at 185 due to stylistic matchups.

I agree. In about a two year time frame, if nobody has dethroned Andy. This is the guy.

he's over rated

the guy to dethrone anderson is the guy who just went to a draw with keith jardine and lost to muhammad lawal? lol ok keep telling yourself that.

Agree he'd fare better at 185. Phone Post

If Keith Jardine can take you down at will you have no future in MMA.

I am extremely confident that Mousasi knocks out:

Machida, Shogun, Rampage, Evans, Griffin & Dan Henderson (the generic LHW contenders)

I pick him in a re-match versus King Mo as well.

He probably struggles with Jon Jones and an improved version of Phil Davis.

I'll gladly bump this thread when the day comes when everyone gets blown away by how amazing Mousasi is.

 Neither could Chuck or Rampage.

LMFAO 2/10 troll.. Hendo and Shogun? Rofl <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

You think this is merely a troll attempt eh?

You mock me now in a condescending tone...but you will see how much of a beast Mousasi is once he beats Mike Kyle & Hendo and then the UFC contenders
