That book would make an interesting read.
When the vid was mentioning Duran and Freddie Brown I was beginning to suspect you made the vid Martin
I think Kenny Weldon has mentioned non american boxing people have benefited by learning from old american fighters while American's themselves have fallen behind.
6.33 Weldon talking about how European fighters are fighting how American's used to fight
Check out 2.20 of this fight.
Duran shifts several times in this fight and just after doing it again at 2.20 Gil Clancy mentions he "like that little move he does" but like Roy doesn't really seem familiar with it.
Voted up great thread. I remember making a thread about shifting after reading an old Fitzimmons book and picking martinburkes brain on it
Im left handed but was trained as orthodox and for as long as i can remember, i just had this natural instinct to shift but always got yelled at for doing it
We are seeing a lot of it in MMA now aswell because it gives you a lot more options for takedowns, kicks aswell. Cruz and Dillashaw are two guys using this
How can one train it properly though? i use it during light sparring when my mind can be creative but its not wired to my muscle memory like i want it to be
It is simply good footwork, Your "handedness" should have nothing to do with which foot is forward at any given time. That is determined by the fight.
Please elaborate
Good stuff
Thanks for posting!
This is a great thread title for the irish...
lol
Cool shit, I am not sure how I missed this thread before. It is interesting that very few people probably have any clue what shifting is and when they see it happen, most people probably assume that the fighter using the shift is exhibiting poor footwork or is out of position.
You know better than Golovkin etc?
DanTheCan - Shifting should only be used when you're sure the opponent will be stepping straight back. It should also only be used to execute straight punching.
Someone should have informed Bob Fitzimmons of this before he knocked out James Corbett by shifting into a hook
Awesome thread, and liking the videos.
Great vid.
Nice find martin
lol
Isn't this how Toney KO'd Nunn?

GREAT vid! What an eye-opener this thread is. Embarrassed to say I never heard of this. Something that looks like bad or "unorthadox" footwork on the surface is really great technical boxing. Really shows the decline in todays boxing trainers to let all this stuff fall by the wayside.
