I rarely comment on fighters I don't know in some way, but after having just seen his UFC fight with Jason Miller, man, who has he not made look bad? He makes good fighters look very average, and that's hard to do.
I also noticed he came out wearing a Purple Belt; anybody knows who he trains BJJ with or have rolled with him?
George trains here at GAMMA in Montreal under BTT black
belt Fabio Holanda. He also trains with Victor Zilberman at
the Montreal Wrestling Club, at the Club de Boxe Champions
and individually at other places around the city including Tri
Star.
He is on the BTT / Canada mma team. You are right, he is
pretty strong.
It is the way those guys in Montreal train. Getting beatings, taking beatings, and giving beatings. Those guys are some of the toughest. No egos in the gym. On reason they go is to get better and push their training partners to get better. Montreal is the fight capital of Canada.
St. Pierre was hilarious in his post fight interview with Rogan. (In a heavy french accent) "If you would permit me, Mr. Rogan ahh wood lahke to thank my sponsors"
I've just been very impressed with the fact he has made some very good fighters look plain. Jason Miller has beaten a lot of good guys and his game was shut down by George.
I think he did make Matt Hughes look un-Hughesish, not as dominant as he is in most other fights.
Anybody ever roll with him? He's obviously very good on the top position but I'm curious what kind of guard he plays.
I'm actually a huge fan of GSP. I was worried that he would not get the respect he deserves, because of the whole "animosity towards the french" thing that was going on in America, but I guess my fears were based on the WWE crown, and were thankfully largly unfounded.
No matter who he fights, and no matter how he does, he always makes them exciting. Thats what counts for me! Go GSP! Can't wait to see your next one...
As a Canadian and an MMA fan who appreciates every aspect of the game, im obviously stoked about Monsieur St. Pierre but, but, people keep blowing his performance against Hughes out of proportion.
I agree with Andy in that he did make Hughes look "unHughes'ish" but people also make it seem like GSP was dominating Hughes until the armbar. SP amazingly took Hughes down (but Hughes got up right away) and hit that nice reverse spinning kick (but Hughes wasnt hurt nor did George follow up on it) and most significantly, seemed to be able to thwart most of Hughes' offence for most of the round.
I think this says just as much as about Hughes as it does about GSP however in that people are giving GSP credit because Hughes was not able to tear his opponent an new a-hole within a few minutes.
But the only real significant offence that happened to my memory was Hughes taking GSP down and passing to sidemount (which was of course followed by the slick armbar).
Though Im sure he is getting better every minute, and may gave Hughes a bit more trouble next time, I think it would be a mistake for Zuffa to match them up again soon. If Hughes wins, which if it takes place within the next year, I would put my money on, that leaves the young GSP defeated twice by Hughes already. Most of the MMA world (including me) is certain GSP will be champ soon but I just think the UFC should hold off and build up this rematch a little bit longer.
But GSP may simply force himself into contention again if he gets past Frank Trigg (though I would still pick Trigg at this point aswell). But aside from Hughes and Trigg, i dont think anyone can beat GSP either. I would like to see Karo to better than last time and though he may, I dont think he would beat SP though.
Of course, BJ vs. any of the top WWs would be great but who really knows what and where BJ wants to do? I think BJ would have to be favoured against SP (in a battle of 2 of the very most complete fighters in the game) but I really believe that what SP said himself about his opponents being "able to 'andle" his "rhythm" is true. There are not many fighters who have his tempo in the main areas of the game.
I think BJ should solidly makes his mark in the WW div. before he fools around with the HWs again but thats his business.
"And just when we're thinking we're leaving the old UFC fans behind, they seem to think GSP is from France or something."
Well, I am from Canada, so believe me, I know where he is from. But he is FRENCH, even if he is not from France. It's possable you know. I am English, and guess what... I'm not from England...
