Get anyone get iMovie to work?

I like OS X, but so far I'm not so nuts about iMovie. It seems like I'm only able to edit quicktime movies. If I drag any other format into iMovie, it rejects it. I can upload many movie formats with Win movie maker. I looked on the net and it seems other people have the same problem with iMovie. A friend told me he has no problem uploading videos from his Camera, but that's not what I want. Do I need some plugin to edit other movie formats with iMovie?

You can use VisualHub to convert other movie formats to DV, which you can then import/edit in iMovie.
