Getting Butterfly Guard?

You seem to be a big fan of the butterfly guard. Is this your primary open guard position? Or do you also play spider, de la riva, x-guard etc?

If you only play butterfly for open guard, what's the best defense for someone who grabs your pants and quickly shoots his legs back? I have your dvd in which you show breaking the grips, but what if they sprawl their legs back and drop their hips?

I believe it is important to have some basic knowledge of various open guard controlling positions. I play a little of everything depending on what my opponent does.

I do like butterfly guard simply because I am good at the hook sweep. However, I don't like to "play" open guard positions. Any time you hold a position for an extended period of time, you give your opponent time to think about how to counter. The more time he has to think, the worse it is for you when he begins to make his move.

I believe in the idea of "touch and go". This means the butterfly position will only exist for 1 second before I start sweeping. I will not give my opponent time to think. I will not give him time to grab my pants. As soon as one of my feet touches your inner thigh, you are starting to go airborne.

wow, that's cool. i like that idea of not 'holding' the open guard, but attacking non stop.

personally, do you find that sitting up (ie sitting guard, butterfly guard), is more comfortable for you in open guard then lying on your back?
