Gi training can make you rely on Gi grips and no-gi forces you to use different grips.
But Gi teaches you to utilize the grips and defend them. More options and also includes no-Gi techniques.
For self defense make sure to learn wrist locks, pressure points, and other not accepted in competition techniques.

Whichever one you enjoy. If you don't train, it won't help you.
