I have a large framed Smith & Wesson revolver. It's got 8 shots and a 4" barrel.

I’m not really a hobbyist, just a guy who wants to be ready if something goes bump in the night. That said, guns do have some appeal beyond their practicality but I don’t have a huge passion for it like many people do. I have a passion for the right to defend oneself. Anyway, how much better off defense-wise would I be if I added a shotgun or a semiauto pistol. I have a high end handgun safe and I had to cut the foam to make it fit my revolver but the second slot is cut perfectly for a 1911 (which I also find to be a really attractive gun - though I’m not sure having one makes me better able to defend my home).
So, many of you know more about guns and guns with respect to defense than I do. What else if anything should I add?
That's a great gun for home defense - nearly perfect...
Guys who might take a chance against a revolver will run like hell from a shotgun. At close range with the proper loads it will nearly cut someone in half.

If you shoot that gun in a small room like a bedroom, you will have saved your life, but will probably be wearing hearing aids the rest of your life...
*love that gun, btw

It IS loud as hell. It’s fun at the range. It makes a bit of a statement acoustically.

Glad to hear you think so. Thanks.

And as far as you loving it, thanks. I really like it. It feels good in the hand, has the weight to tame the .357s a little, and makes .38s feel smooth as butter.

Agreed. The sound of a shotgun racking in a quiet home or apartment is more of a deterrence than actually seeing someone with a pistol. I'm pretty sure you could clear a house of burglers without ever firing a shot

Not that it's all that relevant but this is the gun safe. It comes in three gauges, and I've got the thickest one, the 3 guage.

Not sure about your gun laws…but this is also recommended.
saglv - Much more important than whichever firearm you've chosen (the most important thing, IMHO) is that you're well-versed in its operation and accustomed to using it.
That makes sense, thanks. I’ve shot it enough that I’m comfortable with it but I should train more, I’m by no means an expert. I should also work a lot on reloading it quickly - it has moon clips which should help but practice is still very necessary.
I hope you live alone or are using rounds that disperse their energy very quickly when they come into contact with a solid mass.
I'd go with a shotgun or .45 semi-auto for home defense.

I’m in Maryland so it’s gun laws up the posterior. Not sure if we can have the one you posted or not. It looks cool.
Didn't read. Glock 19
Somebody had to do it. But seriously I have a glock 19 and your setup is probably the best option in your scenario. Need to add a revolver to my stable for the wife to eliminate any steps/moving parts
Pro tip: I keep rubber ear plugs next to my bed. I also carried them in patrol for when I had to go into a building with a loud audible alarm. It'll take the sharpness off loud noises eithout making you deaf. You'll still be able to hear movement and footsteps, trust me. But you might save your hearing if you have to shoot indoors.
