                    <blockquote>

"The difference which makes you a good fighter or not is how well you can deal with the pressure and I think that's something I learned a lot the past year is to use that [to] my favor," said the 29-year-old Gracie. "The more pressure for me, the better, because You are just going to make me train even harder. You are going to push me forward to do better and better."

Born to the late Mauricio Motta Gomes, a seventh degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black and red belt, and Reila Gracie, daughter of Carlos Gracie, might have pushed Roger into a life of fighting whether he would have found it fulfilling or not. Luckily, it's something the dominant jiu-jitsu competitor is thankful for.

"[Fighting is] the joy of my life apart from my family," Gracie said. "I can't see myself doing anything else. The main drive I always had as a father was because I knew where I came from and I knew where I stand in the family. Now if I didn't have that, I don't know if I would have the drive, but now I love what I do and I'm thankful to god that he put me in this place."

the article mistakenly calls his dad "the late" Mauricio Gomes. FYI, Mr Gomes is very much alive and well.

I think they made the mistake of thinking of the late Rolls Gracie, who awarded Mauricio his black belt many years ago. (one of only 6)

Any particular reason why Mauricio is referred to as 'the late'? Phone Post

as noted above...it's a mistake. Mauricio is alive and well.

We must have posted at the same time.
Was gonna say, he looked fine when I last saw him lol. Phone Post

I am a huge fan of Roger Gracie. I hope he takes a path of training that will develop his stand up. The guy is a beast on the ground. I can't say enough about his BJJ. Phone Post

Mauricio Gomes, RIP.

"The main drive I always had as a father was because I knew where I came from and I knew where I stand in the family."

Is he a father?

painbringer666 - kinda disrespectful to his dad to use the gracie last name instead of gomes

Wondering about this myself.  I've got three daughters with no more kids on the way and I'm an only child with no brothers.  How does someone even approach keeping someones last name?

This is common practice in some areas of South America and Roger is not the only one in his family to do this. It's about keeping the Gracie name alive in the lineage.

Not only that, but it's more likley that Roger's parents named him "Gracie"...not him.
