Gravity powered lamps

Awesome idea

Can I use it for a grow operation?!

neat

They need to make a shit-powered lamp for India

Very cool

At 1/10th of a watt you're going to need a lot of them. So many the weight of the bags would pull down the ceiling.

Is there a correlation between watts and lumens?  I bought some LED bulbs that are rated at 10 watts/800 lumens yet they appear brighter than a 60 watt/800 lumens incandescent bulb.  Great deal too.. they were on sale for $1 each. =)

Dont know but gravity is good for bongs

LED require far less wattage than incandescent.

This is an ingenious idea. An African invented it?

what happens when u run out of gravity?

No, not really. Most people associate watts with how bright a bulb should be because of incandescent bulbs. That's why CFL and LED bulbs will usually always say, in fine print, equivalent to 60 watt (etc.) bulb.

Watts is how much power it uses, lumens are how bright it is. The most efficient a bulb is e.g. LED the more of the power goes to producing light and less is wasted (as heat).

People will laugh at this. But this is the point that really needs to be addressed.

We don't run out now, because we have a kind of homeostasis with it. The same amount of gravity is used more or less consistently.

If something like this were to catch on on a large scale, such as large populations in the developing world adopting it, the whole balance of gravity could be affected. Most likely not noticeable in everyday life, but the diminished gravity elsewhere could certainly effect things like delicate machinery or medical devices around the globe. Potentially, it could have catastrophic effects on the tides, as well.
Lol wut

Just saying, this could be a really cool technology for emergency applications, or whatever. But, if people start abusing it on a large scale, like any other natural resource, we all pay the price.
Something to watch out for, for sure.

In 1969 when the largest building in Biafra collapsed the momentary disruption in gravity caused my great uncle Nigel to float off into space.

No joke.  Gravity wastage affects the whole damn world.   So irresponsible.

Ghengiseanie - and repub senator joe barton on Wind Power

2"Wind is God's way of balancing heat. Wind is the way you shift heat from areas where it's hotter to areas where it's cooler. That's what wind is. Wouldn't it be ironic if in the interest of global warming we mandated massive switches to energy, which is a finite resource, which slows the winds down, which causes the temperature to go up? Now, I'm not saying that's going to happen, Mr. Chairman, but that is definitely something on the massive scale. I mean, it does make some sense. You stop something, you can't transfer that heat, and the heat goes up. It's just something to think about."2
That's like the congressman asking if an island could tip over if too many people on it

for the low price of $300 worth of metal weights, motors, and pulleys, you too can power a 10w bulb for 30 seconds at a time using the "free" power of gravity, so efficient. People before time existed had animals walking on treadmills to power primitive tools.
