This past weekend, 10/03/04, I was in Ypisy, MI fighting in a judo tournament. The Great Lakes Judo Championships. I haven't put the gi on or fought judo in two years. I decided that I wanted to do it again and get back into it to help out the rest of my training. SO, I didn't train at all for this tournament. Didn't even put my gi on until it was time for me to fight. I was sleeping in the bleachers all up until they called my name to the mats. I went out there and was not nervous at all. I fought in the womens brown/black belt division at 142lbs. My first match was right
around a minute long. She tried taking me down but I came out the back side, got rear mount and choked her till she tapped. I won. My second match was almost the same thing, just a little different. :0P My
second match I came out and again, she tried to throw me and I came out the back side and got rear mount again. This time the choke was not open so I switched over to an arm bar and held on. I flipped her over
so she was on her back and started wrenching away to break her arms free. Once I got them free, she flipped over and I went belly down arm bar and she tapped ... leaving me with once again the 1st place victory. 4 fights, 4 wins, in 2 weeks, 2 medals and 1 champion. :0)
Next fight will be with the Hook n Shoot promotion in Evensville, IN on November 7th. The name of the event is "Last Women Standing" Looking forward to going after some really good compition.
Marie Colangelo
Anyone know when the next one is that is close or in Michigan?
i think it's the findlay ohio tournament in november.\
usually a good turnout but tends to run long
congrats by the way!
I haven't done judo in a while but we always attended events in Findlay, Bowling Green, and MSU.
enter a real tournament and see if you can sleep in the stands before you fight.
Gee John, where can we find your list of accomplishments?
lil.. congrats on the successes..
Spiff,
i think that JT's point is that winning on a local level is one thing and if it seems to be such a simple thing that she should start to enter more difficult events. its the natural progression of things.
"leaving me with once again the 1st place victory. 4 fights, 4 wins, in 2 weeks, 2 medals and 1 champion. :0)" can sound a bit arrogant (though i didnt take it that way) and i think that is what JT is talking about..
if anybody is able to sleep through a tournament, win it easily and write about it so simply, then it really is time to really seek-out a higher level of competition.
sounded like he was hatin to me is all
fatherhood has really mellowed you out :)
thanks josh......nope not hatin at all biff.
i just never heard of someone talking about never doing judo for two years , sleeping in the stands and then saying ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER 1ST PLACE FOR ME.
all i'm saying is anyone who trains mma should beat up on the lower level woman.
the real deal.
"enter a real tournament and see if you can sleep in the stands before you fight."
Actually, I have fought at top ranked tournaments and against top ranked fighters ..... 2003 Arnolds, Grapplers Quest, NAGA and have slepted at all of them and either one or took 2nd. That's just my way or relaxing before a fight and it seems to work well for me.
"all i'm saying is anyone who trains mma should beat up on the lower level woman."
No sure what you mean by this .......?
Oh yeah, and what I ment by this comment, "then saying ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER 1ST PLACE FOR ME." was that I just fought at Grapplers Quest a week before this event and took 1st.
lil-K.. i THINK jt means you should enter tougher judo tournaments, we all know you enter the best MMA/grappling events you can find.
i just think he means you wont be able to "sleep through a ranked judo event and walk away with 1st place..."
with that being said.. i sleep at tournaments too.. i even have a picture of me sleeping at a tournament with a blanket and my scooby-slippers and another with a post-it stuck to my forehead...
it just isnt common in judo, or in judo circles, to have people say things like "once again another 1st place for me"... lots and lots of people here compete and lots of them could say something like that, but they dont because if there is 1 thing we should all know through judo its how easily the tide can change.
Spiff.. yes, im much more mello now. hard not to be when you are up every 2 hours to feed your little girl... i swear, she has the world's smallest stomach.
