Gripping Help...

The Russian tie or 2-on-1 grip, how in the world do you get to this grip with out the other player getting a grip on the collar of the gi. I am right handed and am attacking the right had of my opponent.
What are some useful gripping set ups to use?

Thanks

ummmmmmmm. dont let him grab your lapel first... ?

if he does grip your lapel first, then break his grip off and dont let him get it again.

You can still get it. He doesn't have to let go. Just confirm his grip and drive your chest and shoulder in.

Thanks for the clip and for the info, will give it a try.

I second everything in the video. I don't 2-on-1, I pull the arm out, grip across the back with the near arm and focus on maneuvering my shoulder behind the opponent's shoulder. If the opponent arm is out I just keep pulling it out, if they want to tuck it in I help them.

Shameless plug: I tried using these kinds of grips for a long time and finally learned how to make them work for me at the Neil Adams camp at Whidbey NAS last year.

Caveat and shameless plug for Budokan style: I think I have not gotten LJ with the new sumi - only once with the previous sumi that involved my knee, the wall at Budokan Seattle and the other person's groin.
