I already know how this is going to go down. Some will say that Hughes is the more decorated wrestler, being that he was a HS state champion and a 4 time collegiate all american and the rest will say that GSP trains w/world class wrestlers up in Canada..
I don't give a damn about credentials or who they train with. From what they've shown in the cage, GSP is the best wrestler at welterweight.
I'm surprised this can still be debated. He's taken down Hughes, Trigg, Sherk, and Koscheck. In the second Hughes fight, he stuffed everything, including when Hughes had double underhooks, with ease. He won the wrestling battles with all of them.
GSP vs Kos asnwered that question for me.
It WILL be debated to death for the simple fact that we've never seen GSP straight wrestle, collegiately. MMA wrestling is wayyy different and noone here can dispute that. My friend was a state runner up and has his way with me everytime we decide to wrestle but when we spar mma style and theres strikes involved and he has to watch out for certain things, its a totally different story. I take him down sometimes. What business do I have taking him down. I didnt even wrestle in high school.

No shit it's different. But considering both Hughes and GSP are MMA fighters, and not collegiate wrestlers, makes it pretty damn obvious what is asked by the question "who is the better wrestler?"
Answer: GSP is the best wrestler at welterweight.

GSP is the much better wrestler.
2 more times at Lincoln Junior College ^^^ He was a JUCO All American before going to Div 1 at Eastern Illinois..
Which one could sell a better chair shot?
GSP is a better MMa wrestler.....but without striking and a cage I'd have to go with Hughes just because of the experience...

He took down Otto Olson at will with no strikes involved. Don't even try to say Otto wanted to work from his guard. Ryan G is correct. GSP is the best wrestler period.

GSP is a better wrestler for MMA. He is faster, has better hips and is more explosive. Hughes takedowns look slow and forced compared to GSP although GSP sets up his takedowns with great striking. I think the countdown showed why GSP is so good. He trains with the best in all disciplines involved in MMA. Hughes trains with his pals.
credentials: Hughes is a 2 time all american D1 and two time first in state. uses power in his takedowns
GSP has never competed in wrestling but according to sources inside the Canadian Olympic Team, he would likely have a shot at making it to the Olympics. In MMA he has shown amazing takedown defense vs top notch wrestlers
in MMA, GSP def gets the nod and im the biggest hughes fan in the world
GSP may be better at takedowns/takedown defense in MMA but give me a break about GSP being a better wrestler than Hughes in a straight up wrestling match.
