GSP is the 2010 Canadian Athlete of the Year

 should have gone to crosby.

-scored the OT winner in the Winter Olympics gold medal game

-2nd for most overall points

-rocket richard trophy

-leading season this year in points

-on pace for 137 points this year. thats insanity!

gsp had one lack luster fight against hardy and one good fight with kos.

3 peat.

His only competition is Crosby. Those no-name Olympians will never win.

Toews had a better year than Crosby. Phone Post

Who the fuk is that Sydeny Crosby guy? Is that all Canada has?

GSP is Canada's last hope/

Who the fuk is that Sydeny Crosby guy? Crosby is the leading player in the NHL right now, along with Ovechkin. I actually have a newspaper here I got while in Montreal for UFC 124 and it said if he scored 20 goals in his next 12 games or something like that he would break a record that only Lemieux & Gretzky have achieved. He scored the winning overtime goal in the Canada vs. USA Hockey game at the Olympics last year which was a big deal. With hockey being Canada's biggest sport, it's pretty crazy that GSP beat him in a user poll 3 years in a row. Impressive.

Thank you GSP! I just informed my wife of the news and I am pretty sure I am getting lucky tonight! Here's to a great 2011 and I hope you fight and win often (more than twice though, 2010 was slow for me) Phone Post

Well, since this really was just a popularity vote, it really doesn't speak to any of the athlete's accomplishments over the past year.

For the record, Joey Votto won the Lou Marsh award, which is probably a better indicator of Canadian Athlete of the Year.

With that being said, Jonathon Toews was Canada's best athlete over the last year and easily had the greatest accomplishments:

-captain of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Black Hawks while notching the second most points (29)
-winning the Conn Smythe trophy as the MVP of those playoffs
-gold medalist in the Vancouver Olympics
-named Top Forward in those Olympics and had a tournament leading 8 points

I definitely have to give both GSP and Dana White/Zuffa credit though. MMA has become the most popular sport amongst the younger generations, and in a similar silly bracket tournament that covered all of North America... I'm not sure that GSP wouldn't give guys like Pujols, Tom Brady and Kobe a run for their money with the under 35 crowd.

Trust me, beating Crosby in any Canadian popular vote is definitely significant.

I agree 100%

I'm Canadian and I love hockey, but mixed martial artists like Georges stand out way more than any individual hockey players and he deserves this.  Toews and Crosby are both incredible, but neither of them stand out above their peers to the level that Georges does.

 TTT

GSP is an international destroyer.

Crosby is just beating fellow Canadian's in the NHL and then occasionally beating crap teams in the Olympics. If he was so good then he wouldn't have allowed the US team to beat them in their first game.

To the Death George and I'm not joking!

I'm a GSP fan, but Joey Votto shoulda won. Just sayin' Phone Post

PrettyBoy - Lol you guys mad? I like GSP but let's get serious he would never win an honor like that in a country like America. Too many Armstrongs, Phelps, Bryant, Brady,Vick, James, Bush,Peterson, Lewis, I could go on all day. <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>

I don't know about that. It's more of a popularity contest. How many fans do those sports have compared to MMA - especially the fans that actually care enough to do these polls.

Also, you can't really compare the number of athletes that hail from the U.S. versus those from Canada unless you look at other statistics. Aside from factors like climate, culture, economy, the number one thing that stands out is population. You're comparing a country of 34 million to a country of 308 million. That means if everything else were equal, for every one of Canada's GSP's the U.S. should have ten equivalent athletes.

Do you know who Canada is bro?

I'd like to add too that an international Canadian athlete popularity poll would probably find Owen Hargreaves at the top of the list, contrary to Dana White's remarks.

I'm a huge GSP fan but I too was shocked he won this year.

I figured Sidney's "golden goal" was a lock. It proves just much MMA has come mainstream in Canada.

Good stuff.

No, it just seemed to me that the Canadian populace was still pissed at their hockey team for losing the first game.

...and it does. But apparently not in MMA.

I doubt it. As long as you win the last, who will remember the first?
