So much that it made him afraid to even spend 30 seconds on the ground with Jake. I think he could have smothered him just like he did everyone else.
GSP trains with guys like Braulio Estima and Roger Gracie but he was afraid to go on the ground with Jake Shields? lol
What's gonna happen when he faces Maia if he was that terrified of Shield's ground game?
Keeps it standing and jab fucks Maia's face for 5 rounds into hamburger.
Althoufg I am big Maia fan so I wouldn't mind if he won.
Keep it on the feet and out strike him? What else would he do? You want him to pull guard?
GSP wouldn't jab shit. his fear of the takedown would hamper his striking. people try and make it seem like he underperformed against Shields because of the eyepokes, but that's bullshit. other than getting blasted by Ellenberger, Shields has shown to make fighters look as bad as he does on the feet.
I agree that he overestimated his BJJ, but the eye was a huge factor. They picture of George's eye after the fight was pretty definitive... it was full of blood.
rewatch the fight retard, he was doing the same shit in the first 2 Rounds. it's always a fucking excuse with GSP fans. GSP's striking is so far ahead of Shields, that eye poke excuse isn't going to work.
no, YOU need to rewatch the fight. GSP was controlling the fight, he wasn't looking stellar.
GSP had a big advantage over Shields in the stand up (until the eye poke). Shields is great on the ground and not very good on the feet. Why take him down?
GSP overestimates all his opponents these days. That much is obvious. He thought Dan Hardy was Anderson Silva and Jake Shields was Jacare.

That fear of the takedown really stifled his jab against Koscheck.
Shields is dangerous in the ground and has a mean guillotine, especially when guys are shooting on him. There was no need for GSP to blanket him when he could pick him apart with strikes.

I'm not saying Maia isn't a better BJJ player than GSP but....who has Maia faced on the level of GSP? Maia is one of the best grapplers in the world, but I don't see anybody dominating GSP on the ground. I'm not saying he COULDN'T sub him, I'm just saying its not likely. Furthermore, GSP would keep it on the feet with Maia and just pick him apart at range. If anybody could sub GSP now, it would be Maia, but I don't see it coming easy for him.
Spider why did you edit your post?
He didn't overestimate. If there's an even 5% risk GSP won't do it.

I voted you up because that's so true. In the pre-fight hype, they made it seem as if Hardy had the best striking in MMA and as if Jake Shields was a better BJJ artist than Marcelo Garcia.
If you ask me, GSP has a better ground game than Shields and wayyyyyy better striking than Hardy but he fights safe.

You do realize he's the top ppv draw in MMA right? Maybe he knows how to sell a fight?
