Has anyone else noticed how nausiatingly perfect GSP's fencing footwork is? And how he never breaks from the French Fencing School of Footwork! I'd love to know who he trains with. Poor Koscheck just looked like a touched target, with foil only I believe. GSP didn't even notch it up a weapon. It was so embarrassing it made me feel like my first tournament bout where some smartass demonstrated the lunge and I didn't even block.
The only way fencing doesn't adapt to the Octagon in my humble opinion is:
in the lunge. GSP's use of fencing fotwork is rigid. H euseds it to position himself and then snaps out of it with his feet still pinned in position. And from there one has to fuck up one's upper posture and essentially over extend one's body to land a punch where the blade tip would have scored. So my questions are:
In the long term, will GSP do himself a lower back injury by using such a rigid fencing style in his stand up game? And does it benefit him to conform so rigidly to another martial discipline or is the only benefit total honour to Bruce Lee? Because it's my understanding that Lee loved the way fencing footwork was constantly adjusting to place the fighter in the ideal position during the fight, that it was strengths of the footwork used in it's own sport that he adapted, not absolute fencing footwork.
What say you?

How many threads are you going to make on this?
This is the thread! And GSP is the footwork wonder of the world...
Or is he?
Is GSP ABLE to damage his lower back?
;)
:D
GSP's footwork is almost as good as Marcus Davis'
Hmmm, I see what you're doin with this thread.
Jump lunges all day my good man.
GageIsLegend - I remember sherk after the fight was saying how amazing his footwork was with him. <img src="/images/phone/post_tag.png" alt="Phone Post" border="0" style="vertical-align:middle;"/>
I thought it was more along the lines of "I couldn't get a hold of him to save my life...must have accidentally gotten some oil on him or something"
this isn't fencing where you win by touching the guy.
Georges moves well but he frequently punches from up on his toes, instead of sitting his weight down on good punches
