Guy Mezger news?

can anyone leave some information on the health of Mezger. great fighter and hoping all is well.

Last I heard he was doing great and really enjoying teaching more than ever. Word is that he has a couple of young fighters that are really good and we'll be seeing them soon.

As far as Guy, I haven't heard if he's cleared to fight again or not. IMO, there is no need at all for him to get back in the ring (or cage) He has nothing in this world left to prove. He's been there and done that already. He's been all over the world and fought the very best.

I think one thing that makes a fighter great is that when he is finished fighting, that he is able to not only train and teach, but to "give" what he had to another fighter, so that fighter may do as well as he has done.

Hopefully, we'll see Guy do just that.

Guy was up in Minneapolis for an XKK show a couple of months ago and said that his health is great but he is done fighting. He is the head instructor at the Lion's Den in Dallas, so that is his main focus now.

BTW, he was very down-to-earth and willing to spend time talking with the fans.

BoxingInsider.com: Now, we've talked about Ken, but you've been through some trying times yourself as of late. You were supposed to have fought Tito Ortiz at UFC 50, but due to some health concerns it didn't happen. There were a lot of different things being said. You had a stroke, you had this, you had that. Did the doctors ever determine what actually happened?

Guy Mezger: Yes. What happened is, I did have a stroke. Not just one, but I had two. As for my health, I'm healthy, I'm back to training. Ken, I've been through so many tests I feel violated. The doctor's advice is that there's no reason I shouldn't go back to fighting, but they don't recommend that I do. There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, there was no reason for me to have the stroke in the first place. I don't drink, not even casually. I don't do drugsā€¦ I mean I'm a martial artist on top of being a fighter. That just means that I've been living the lifestyle since I was a kid. The only thing is, I was taking Vioxx. The doctor was like, "I strongly suspect that it could be the Vioxx because there's no reason for you to be having strokes."

BoxingInsider.com: And why were you taking Vioxx?

Guy Mezger: Vioxx is an anti-inflammatory. My knee is pretty tore up, so I was taking 25 milligrams four or five times a week for a number of years when I trained hard. Merck, the company that makes Vioxx, neglected to let everybody know that it [can lead] to having strokes and heart attacks.

BoxingInsider.com: So where does that leave you now?

Guy Mezger: Like I said, the doctors let me go back to my training, but what kind of scares me is, they don't know the lasting effects are. They suspect once you stop taking it that it works out of your system. But they're not sure. We'll know more as the research comes out, but you know, I got lucky. I don't have any negative side effects from it.

Good recovery GUY
