Marijuana bust nabs 81-year-old Big Island man

Associated Press

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — An 81-year-old man is facing numerous charges following a marijuana bust on the Big Island.

Lt. Miles Chong says Leovegildo Mercado of Kau was charged with three counts of commercial promotion of marijuana, one count of promoting a detrimental drug and six firearms violations. His bail was set at $10,700.

Chong says Mercado and a 64-year-old man were arrested Thursday when police executed a search warrant on a home in Pahala. He says the other man was released without charges, pending further investigation.

According to Chong, officers recovered 506 marijuana plants, 4.9 pounds of dried marijuana, two rifles, a handgun and ammunition. He says police also seized almost $44,000 in cash.

Only the name will be KUIndustries instead of Mercado. Ha!
