Im wondering how people deal with headsqueezers at your gym? You know the guy who only goes for the headlock no matter what.
Not that I can't work my way out but I hate killing half of a sparring round in a stalemate because someone doesnt want to actually try any technique.
Any suggestions? Am I the only one who hates this sh*t?
while you could find over 10 different escapes to headlocks in videos floating on the net, the best is to just not people get control over your head.
cut off your ears and nair your head }:-)
I can escape but it pisses me off because it doesnt feel like we are working on anthying.
For example we were starting from the knees yesterday and I am at a serious size and reach dis advantage. On top of that my partner yesterday almost refuses to engage. As such I often times end up in bad postions at the start because Im not looking to waste too much time doing nothing so Im reaching a little bit. On multiple occasions I ended up on good positions with him holding my head out of instinct whatever. On one occasion I was in side control and he had the headlock. He makes no attemp to improve position or finish he just goes for the stalemate. I guess I could dig a knuckle into his ribs but that seems like a dick move.
Again the problem isnt escaping, I just don't get it everyone can do a headlock so your not improving anything by doing it in that situation, basically just killing sparring time.
Guess Im the only one.
I deal with this alot. Just wait it out. They will tire eventually. The key is to ignore the pain on your cheeks and you'll be fine. It's just like icing, the nerves will die eventually and you'll be able to take it indefinitely. It's like the push up on the nose pain, you can just ignore it if you know how.
My brother this week has spent at least 30 minutes trying to choke me, about half with guillotine and half from my back and he hasn't gotten close. Keep your chin down and just fight your hands inside his grip. I usually grab individual fingers if we are in street clothes but if we are in mma gear I don't.
I really appreciate all the advice on escaping, and I can use it to be honest, but what Im wondering is there something that you guys would suggest for me to do kind of send a message that its not really a cool way to train?
Im not talking about legitimate attempts at tapping me Im talking about those silly crsuh your ears hold on for dear life headlocks.
My thinking is we are there to train and get better, we are learning anything in a stalemate headlock other than its really hard to submit someone by earbar and I would rather work through different positions etc.
Maybe its an ego issue I don't know but its getting ridiculous.
^ Again I can get out, thats not the point.
The point is this is practice, In the example above my arm was free and pressed against his face, ie if its a real fight Im rearranging it with my elbow. I got out and was still in side control but we were only working on 3 minute rounds and that killed probable half a minute all by itself.
It just seems like a desperation move as opposed to an actual technique and for reference I have never seen anyone with more than a couple months of experience go for headlocks from that position.
I agree there are times to use it but as the only thing you go for over and over I find it annoying in practice where we are supposed to learn.
Oh well I really must be the only one that finds this annoying, I can't beleive that no one else has ever thought this wasn't the greatest way to train.
OK - sorry it's not an informed comment because I don't train, but that just sounds ridiculous to me.
Isn't the point of training to tighten down technique and figure out where the weaknesses are? Why would you bother trying to muscle someone on the practice mat?
I guess Im cutting off my ears, maybe I should go buy the nair first.
Straight up bro..your instructor should be noticing it...but, may be your like me and that's not a option!!! Jiu-jitsu is the easy and nice way as long as everyone goes by those rules...This is not the case!!
The natural human reaction is to fight force with force....Maybe that's his prob. and he needs to calm down...Of course..That's the prob. not the case....If he goes for a head lock...Don't allow a guillotine...Whatever you do don't let the legs close..Hop over them....once in side mount you can go reverse scraf hold and alot of times they'll reach for your neck..But I guess you've made it to side mount...you need to put a forearm on his neck and break out of that...it's not a nice thing to do but, He's the one that clamed...Wait for his hold to break and mount him or go reverese scrarf and wait for him to grab your head then mount.....
Alittle free info.....
Black belt info???
Cheddar
I guess thats the way to go, I can work out without really crushing his head etc but I guess Im just being too nice.
In fact the more I think about it thats whats going to happen when we go for real so if he wants to go for headlocks in a hopeless position I guess its forearm across the face or knuckes into the rib cage for him.
saku, you have two options.
you could sit down with the guy and explain to him that he will never develop good jiujitsu doing this, and that he's screwing his training partners too.
you can tell him this, or you can show him this. showing is usually much more effective.
the answer to your problem is jiujitsu.
"I can escape but it pisses me off because it doesnt feel like we are working on anthying."
you're working on a headlock escape, the most common street hold you will ever encounter.
"For example we were starting from the knees yesterday and I am at a serious size and reach dis advantage."
good, it will help you focus on technique
"On top of that my partner yesterday almost refuses to engage. As such I often times end up in bad postions at the start because Im not looking to waste too much time doing nothing so Im reaching a little bit."
read stephen kestings excellent thread on this topic.
" I guess I could dig a knuckle into his ribs but that seems like a dick move."
yeah but not enough of a dick move, you should put your forearm across his throat and let him choke himself if he's trying to clamp down a headlock from bottom sidemount like that.
"Again the problem isnt escaping"
yes it is. in jiujitsu, escapes flow into counters and mistakes are punished. if you used this as learning opportunity, and mastered the proper jiujitsu counters to stupid $hit like this, he'll stop using it.
....can escape but it pisses me off because it doesnt feel like we are working on anthying. For example we were starting from the knees yesterday...
K
Quit starting from the knees.
Problem solved.
forearm to throat gives a quick release, then get to work
The best way of making him stop doing it, is to do it to him times 10.
Like this:
Maybe that will get his attention.
"On one occasion I was in side control and he had the headlock."
Use von flue choke.

No I always found them annoying as well. Just have to learn to protect your head and make sure you do not end up in their guard during a take down.
