Hector Lombard (23-2-1) is a formerly top ranked judoka who competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympics representing his home country of Cuba. In his home country of Cuba, Lombard has won several titles in judo in the 73 kg weight class.
Lombard got his start into mixed martial arts when he was at home watching a dvd on mixed martial arts, and decided he should make the move to the sport. After watching the dvd, he decided to make the move to American Top Team in Florida.
Currently, Lombard is riding an impressive sixteen-fight win streak and is Bellator’s middleweight champion. Now with Bellator Season’s 2 and 3 underway Lombard will get a chance to continue to solidify himself as one of the top middleweights in the world. MMA Recap’s Andrew Gladstone spoke with Lombard to give this former Olympic Judoka a place to speak his mind on Bellator.
What were your thoughts when you competed in a tournament for Bellator last year? And if you could give any advice to any of the fighters in the tournament, what would you tell them?
"I love the tournament style because the best meet at the end and only you could be the difference in how far you can reach. To be patient and treat a fight per fight until you reach the end."
What’s it like being the Bellator middleweight champion?
"For me I feel okay, its not getting there but remaining the champion for many years."
Where do you feel you rank in the middleweight division?
"I always rank my self as number 1."
What’s your take on Bellator continuing to have tournaments with the winner getting a shot at you?
"This is great."
Name one thing mma fans don’t know about you?
"I love Jesus."
Who would you like to fight next?
"Anyone, I want to fight the best."
