obviously yes, but it would need to be more egregious than any ref call i've seen so far for it to make sense for the fighter to start reffing himself.
I think anyone who's trained on the ground significantly can tell the difference between choking someone out and choking them till they're dead.

You go until the ref stops you. That is your job. If you want to let him go after you're SURE he's out then that fine. We've all seen and heard those occasions that people tap and the ref doens't see it and let the fight go and the guy winds up losing a fight that he obviously won.
Although, I would have some choice words for the ref after the bout regarding his abilities. The refs are there for the fighters safety.
If you don't know wtf you're doing or wtf you're seeing in a MMA fight, you have no business reffing it. Somebody could get seriously hurt or killed.

He let go as soon as he felt his opponent go limp. That's when the stupid ref stopped the fight. It's the ref's responsibility to stop the fight, not the fighters'.
