I was wondering if someone could explain how the copyright situation works with t-shirts. Is it possible to use a movie quote, or a picture from a movie on a shirt for distribution purposes? Do you have to get permission from the company? Or, is there a way around it?

Rights to distribution belong to the copyright holder. Yes, you have to get permission. You can negotiate either a lump sum advance payment or a per unit royalty. Or you can take a chance selling bootlegs & hope not to get sued.

There is a bit of fair use wiggle room when dealing with quotes, but it basically comes down to how much the copyright holder is willing to sue, & it's always best to avoid that scenario & just do the right thing.

i figured as much, thanks a lot...
