It's only illegal if you open your glove and use an open hand. And even then more because you're not supposed to open your glove.
Backhands are illegal because it's a less padded part of the glove. Same reason you're not allowed to strike with the palm heel.

It's called a "glove eclipse". Came from the term "lunar eclipse".
it literally comes from back in the days when there were not such "legel rulles" and the fighters would rub some kind of irratant on the end of thier glove and put in the other guys face. other fighters realized that it was a good measuring tool and adapted it as such. For the most part it is just measuring as said above.
