HELWANI BIGGER THAN LESNAR

As a long time lurker, I can tell you that the range of media coverage through the years has come a long way, from irrelevant/obscure to feverishly mainstream. Over those years, Ariel Helwani has been one of the few consistencies, both in accuracy of reporting and in quality standards of content. Here in Canada, all the major sports media outlets picked up the story on Helwani's removal, subsequent ban and reinstatement. Further, these media outlets all ran the Helwani story coverage over Lesnar's return. TSN.ca had a huge link to the AH ordeal, while Brock was relegated to a smaller side piece. Whether or not you like the Nose, it's hard to disagree that he is the quintessential insider that the sport needs.

Nothing wrong with a little side piece. Phone Post 3.0

It is odd that Helwani got more press then Brock or 202. Basically by removing him for spoiling Bricks return, the UFC hurt the amount of positive press 200 got. Glad to see he's back. Phone Post 3.0

mada - It has nothing to do with Helwani himself and everything to do with the media sticking together to preserve their perceived rights. He's not bigger than Lesnar. The media is just more concerned about one of their own being slighted than they are about news. I'm not defending the UFC as I think they consistently act like a petulant child in most of their business transactions, just saying I think the rally Ariel received was because of what happened, not to whom it happened.
Very true. Phone Post 3.0

I beg to differ. The rally received was totally for whom it happened to too. Let say if only Esther Lin was escorted out, no f*cks would have been given. This was totally about Ariel.

Anyways we need an Esther Lin appreciation thread soon

True to a certain extent but I also think Helwani got that reaction because of the work he puts in communicating with mainstream media.
Here in Ireland Helwani is a regular contributor on a sports radio show that never discussed MMA before Mcg came along, and they also led with the AH story over Brock, and the Conor Nate announcement. Had it been say, Ben Fowlkes or Mindenhall, I don't know if it would have gotten a mention.
Ariel does alot with mainstream media, as evidenced on the mcg retirement day, think he was on 16 different shows worldwide Phone Post 3.0

If Helwani signed to work for a new org, it would not be in your paper. It only got attention because of the circumstances. I'm sure most people reading about it had never heard of him. Phone Post 3.0
