Herniated disc L5-S1

Stupidnewbie -

I have a 5-6mm bulge and facet joint arthritis. I did exosome injections which healed all the nerve pain and drop foot. I still have a constant reminder of the arthritis but I continue to stay active and do jiu jitsu. I use Foundation Training and BPC-157 injections to help me maintain. I'm avoiding surgery for as long as I can.

Rusin Foundation training?

He's talking about this: https://www.foundationtraining.com/

Just a warning, Foundation Training messed up my mid-back. Hinging is not good for your back (but better than bending) and the Founder position hurt my back and I couldn't turn over in bed without effort for a year because of it. A few others have perported the same. It's not based on any science. Made by a chiro.

Same thing for me. Bulging though. Took about 3 years to feel better. Lots of stretching. Ended up getting Radiofrequency Ablation done last August. After healing from that a couple months I feel fucking GREAT as far as my back goes. Of course as soon as the back starts feeling better my left thumb joint goes bone on bone and now I'm healing from that surgery. Fucking getting old and being active sucks.

I hurt my l5s1 about a month ago, via too much heavy weight training too fast.

The first few days were terrible. Couldn't even stand for more than 30 seconds. Terrible pain in my upper back/hip area and it felt like my femur was on fire. Also shin numbness and weird tightness on the outer edge of my knee.

After 4 days I was OK enough to get to a sports clinic / chiro.

Thats where they did the xray showing the disc all squished out of place.

I had 3 adjustments a week for 2 weeks along with doing ice on it multiple times a day plus stretching and core work.

Now, thank God it feels like it never happened. Been back in the gym for over a week and it's no problem. I do try to avoid any heavy spine compression, like OHP etc.

I was worried / skeptical as I'd never been to a chiro before, but Damn if it didn't do the trick.

It's also possible it would have fixed itself just from the ice/rest and stretching but whatever. I'll take it.

Now I work on my core like a crazy person.

Yep. Had my l1-s5 herniated.. twice.

First time I had a microdiscectomy, second they wanted to fuse my spine. I'm doing nerve medication and physiotherapy currently.

The second time I was in so much agonizing pain I couldn't walk or even move at one point. Had to have the paramedics take me out of my house. At times I was uncontrollably screaming and would pass out from the pain.

My advice is if you get the microdiscectomy do all the physiotherapy after. I didn't and that's probably why it herniated the second time.

I am a very active person myself, I do judo and catch wrestling. Haven't got back to the mats since my last spell, it's been around a month but they say I will get there again.

Has the doctor put you on gabapentin?

You and I am the same person. Last surgery done on my l5 disc didn't help me at all. So I'm doing the fusion in December when my wife can handle the house shit while I'm down for a few weeks.

And yes take your gabapentin. Nothing helps me like that stuff

My first surgery held up for almost 10 years.

Still did judo and wrestled.

I won't be able to if I get the fusion. I am on the road to recovery. It is just such a piss off that it is such a slow process. I was going to go for my black belt this next year but that's off the table for now.

I had a fusion 3 years ago and was back on the mat after about a year and a half

I've had some pain come and go in the lower back. Gets cronic after lifting but spikes with moving or bending.

100% feels like pain in the bones, nothing muscular. Could be the SI joint in terms of the center of the pain. Lots of pain when bending to sit or stand. Shooting pain if not careful.

Always gets worse after lifting, even eliptical work was giving me problems.

At times its created numbness in one side of my gluts and one leg.

Over the last ten years rowing, eliptical, squating and deadlifting have all caused it to "reappear"  with bouts of intense shooting pain and cronic pain.

Does this sound like MRI time?

update: i am getting the procedure done this monday. I am super excited to get rid of the numbness and pain! hope all goes well.

I'm getting 2 discectomies on tuesday. If I all of a sudden stop posting. This week, it means it didn't go well and I'm  dead. Lol.

I will update after.

L4,l5,s1

it sucks. I can't wait for them to cut me open.

how did it go?

Speaking from experience, you're going to need to limit your physical hobbies or you'll more than likely injure it later on down the road. Just got through dealing with my third ruptured disc. I'm still not 100%, but I am mindful of all my movements now. I do not want to go through that hell again if I can avoid it.

I think only those of us who have had nerve damage from a disc are the only ones who know how bad the pain is. You can tell people how bad it hurts, but they really can't fully comprehend it.

This last episode I went through, I wanted to take a hatchet and chop off my leg. I seriously contemplated it in order to stop the pain.

I did not do surgery this time. Just time to let it heal and then physical therapy. It's still not where it was before the injury, but it's better than it has been in the last few months.

Good luck and hope you recover.

i agree you cannot explain the pain to anyone. Its just simply crazy.

Update: had my microdiscectomy for l5-s1 yesterday. Doc said went great but was worse than MRI was showing. Right out of recovery felt better no limping no pain at all. Only issue I have is my foot is still a little numb (not as numb as it was). Hopefully that fixes. Thanks for all the advice and I'll make sure to walk, walk, walk.and walk.

That is great to hear man!

When I had my neck fusion done, my hand / a issues were gone for the most part, no buzzing, no shakes etc,

there were some slight residual tingles here or there,,,

the downside, I lost more neck mobility than I had figured......

   it's a process , but you'll crush it!

Good to hear man!  My L5S1 disc is completely blown out and literally spooged down alongside my spine, LOL, it's all fucked up but I've been able to postpone surgery by staying in shape and doing LOTS of stretching.  Had nerve damage and muscle atrophy in one leg for a while and was on crutches, it has all come back perfectly.  Been lucky so far.

Doc said running is bad (impact) so I quit doing spartan races, no big loss.  Hoping to get back in the cross-country race circuit next year again (dirt bikes), so that'll be interesting.  Doc just shakes his head.

Awesome. So I had an epidural 1 month prior loving life again…energy was back and I was lifting. Well I started incorporating sprinting/walking into my routine and I believe that’s what cause the pinch nerve . No more running for me either!

Yeah by all accounts, the constant impact of running just makes the disc material push out more.  Running sucks anyway.  haha

yeah, running or any of that high impact stuff should be ruled out for life but that’s just my opinion.

I had my surgery in 2013. I forget how long I waited but I was back in the gym pretty quickly after. I went right back to squats, deadlifts, etc… I started light and moved up to what was heavy for me. I am still at it. The basis of my entire gym routine is keeping my back and posterior chain as strong as I can.

My back has probably never felt better. I’ve had back problems since HS Football too.

Yeah, I was off the percocets after two weeks, it was painful , but being a constipated junkie just isn't my thing,

Watched my dad and aunt have the same surgery and they went full addict.

I have a small herniation l5 s1 that triggered sciatica.

My rehab was done with pilates and I fell in love with it. Kept doing 2x private pilates sessions per week for about one year and a half. Now I've moved on to weight training but still using lots of what I learned in pilates.

Can highly recommend it.

3 days out still little numbness in foot hoping goes away.leg feels weak but no pain. I'm doing multiple small walks a day.

Pilates is awesome. I was doing it 6 or 7 years ago for a while in an attempt to rehab my newly arthritic hip. I ended up making friends with the studio owner, dated one of the instructors and even went through instructor certification for floor just for fun.

I was always the only guy in a class of 8 to 20 mostly hot girls. It's like yoga was 20 years ago. Giggle.

I just had this surgery done almost 2 weeks ago. this is my 2nd time. the 1st one was in 2013. symptoms were a lot worse in 2013 but the recovery was a lot easier. Not sure why. after the surgery, I don't recall any lingering symptoms from the sciatic nerve.

this time, I’m pretty worried because it’s almost 2 weeks and I’m still having some pain and numbness in my glute, and occaisionaly down my leg etc… Surgeon isn’t worried but I am. He just put me on some prednisone for 5 days. We’ll see. I don’t want another f’n surgery.
