HIV & Hepatitis in NY MMA scene

I wrote THIS very important piece for Deadspin. The gist of it is that there are fighters competing in the New York amateur MMA scene with HIV, Hepatitis and other nasty stuff.

Since I try to go to every NY MMA event, I hope I didn't kill the thing I love. But it's a story that had to be written.

Love the quotes from Sirb, the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission.

NY's MMA scene is "a mess" -- but that said, it's still better than a lot of states where pro MMA is legal...?

Ugh.

Anyway, good stuff, Jim

A lot was cut out of the piece, but Sirb was basically saying that there are other states that are worse.

Yeah, I got it. It's just messed up.

Hope this gets the attention it needs.

Wow, not a lot of outrage at this issue. I'm shocked.

"Some events don't even have doctors. They rely instead on paramedics, acupuncturists, or calls to 911 operators."-

Acupuncturists?!?!

Much respect for writing that article- it did need to be written.

no amount of money is worth the risk, especially the peanuts these guys are probably fighting for.

Wow that's unreal!

Great article it had to be brought to light. Phone Post 3.0
