Hockey Canada president gives thumbs down to proposed hockey fighting tourney

December 18, 2003
HALIFAX (CP) - A proposed pay-per-view hockey fighting tournament got a big thumbs down from Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson on Thursday.

Promoter Darryl Wolski of Brandon, Man., wants to gather between 50 to 100 brawlers to participate in the tournament next summer in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Nicholson said there's little Hockey Canada can do about something that's being run by a private entrepreneur.

"It certainly isn't something amateur hockey's governing body wants to promote," he said.

Wolski hopes the project, dubbed Hockey Gladiators, will forge new ground in live-action sports entertainment, like the Ultimate Fighting Championships did more than a decade ago.
