How did boxers get so much financial power?

Mayweather grosssed over 700 million in earnings from his fights. How did boxers get into a position to get so much of the cut compared to MMA fighters? Yes, I know that boxers started their own promotions and co-promotions but how did it get that way? Didn't the first to market boxing promotion monopolies have the power to pay boxers a substantial sum but not the ridiculous sums they're getting now and prevent them from starting their own fight promotions?

I imagine having an incestuous relationship with the NSAC doesn't hurt when it comes to getting the UFC a bigger share of the pie over its fighters compared to boxing.

Boxers pretty much write their own ticket without having Zuffa siphoning off the bulk of the money.

^ The correct answer.

However while the fighter having all the power benefits the fighter, it can have negative impact for the fans, titles, & the sport in general.

Fighters stop fighting as frequently, FMJ for example had 10 fights in '97, 8 fights in 98', started making bank & went to 1-2 fights a year.

It becomes a huge pain in the ass to actually get top fighters to face each other, title races slow down to crawl, champs can go for years with out facing who is widely regarded as the #1 contender.

Once a single fighter has the drawing power the under-card becomes weak because it is really just time filler, under-card fighters make pennies & at times have even paid out of pocket to get the under-card bout just to gain some TV exposure.

And to be honest were/are people like FMJ, Tyson, etc etc.. really the character of people that we want turned loose on society with a 700 million dollar bank role?

Yes the lower & mid tier MMA fighters are underpaid, but a champ like GSP making about 4 million a bout seems pretty reasonable to me, and plenty enough to secure their future. Any more and they aren't hungry, don't compete as often, don't accept all the challenges they should....

IMHO their needs to be a happy medium somewhere so that lower level fighters make enough to train and live on, & top tier fighters make enough so that top athletic talent is drawn to the sport & they can secure their futures, with out creating pre-madonas throwing around insane amounts of money that in the end comes from our pockets.

Nope, WAYYYYY before Ali, prizefighters were financial Trojans Phone Post 3.0

Floyd went out on his own and cut out all of the promoters. To be legal in Nevada, he pays Golden Boy a flat fee to use them and their promoters license, but it is really Mayweather promoting it. Instead of a promoter getting the gate money, the sponsors and advertising dollars and the 50/50 PPV split with the cable/sattilite companies, Floyd gets it all, and pays out everyone else on the card and then keeps what is left. You see what kind of money Floyd is making. That should give you an idea of how much Zuffa and Dana are pulling in and fucking the fighters out of.

Yup! Phone Post 3.0

Floyd Mayweather is not remotely representative of the financial clout of the average boxer.
