From Wikipedia:

White has a background as a boxercize instructor. He onced trained in boxing and entertained the idea of becoming a boxer, but he later gave that up and never even had a professional fight. In 1992, White established Dana White Enterprises in Las Vegas. He tried to establish three gyms in the Las Vegas area, and using his boxing training he taught boxercise classes to women and middle aged men. He tried to get into professional boxing management by applying for a job with the company of famous promoter Bob Arum but was rejected. White would eventually get into managing two mixed martial arts fighters, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell, as his clients.

As luck would have it, one of White's boxercize clients ended up being the wife of childhood friend Lorenzo Fertitta, which served to re-unite the two friends. Fertitta, the heir to the billion dollar Station Casinos empire and a former commissioner of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, would later prove instrumental in White's career advancement.

White and Fertitta had been mulling over the idea of promoting boxing events together with Fertitta as the monetary benefactor, but decided to buy the UFC instead when Semaphore Entertainment Group put it up for sale. Within a month, Lorenzo Fertitta and his older brother Frank Fertitta III bought the UFC, with installed White as its president. They even gave White 10% ownership of Zuffa, LLC, the entity the Fertitta brothers created to own and manage the UFC.

On April 12, 2007, had a special on the training for the contract stipulated boxing match betweeen himself and Tito Ortiz. This was to be sanctioned in Nevada, but the match did not occur due to Tito's non-arrival.
