How did NYC crime stats drop that much in 25 years

Wasn't all Rudy was it?  Look at the second section and watch the murders drop by massive numbers.

2262 murders in 1990 to just 335 in 2016?

See Newburgh NY for your answer.

Free housing offers upstate took the crime north.

Crime everywhere dropped dramatically. That and Majorie infringements on freedom and civil liberties

Had never heard of it but you weren't joking

The only reason to go to Newburgh is the bars and restaurants along the waterfront, or the Newburgh Brewery which is only a couple block from the waterfront. Leaving the waterfront area effectively means you're walking straight into the worst parts of the Bronx or Brooklyn, since that's where most of the residents of Newburgh came from, and they brought their crime with them. Don't be fooled by it's small size, Newburgh is absolutely ridden with gang activity and drug-fueled crime, and a quick look around you in much of city at the gang signs spray-painted on buildings, barbed wire fences, and bars on windows will be more than enough evidence to suggest this.

They(rudys crew) offered free bus rides and section 8 housing update as a way to clean up NYC. Worked great but the towns that took in the "refugees" got jacked up.

Newburgh is just one example.

Still , NYC is still left with a massive population and I'm sure bad folks to replace ones that left .  84% drop in murders can't just be explained by moving some folks out.

interest rates went down, real estate sky rocketed and the only criminals able to stay are white collar

Again, baffled that in a city of over 8 million, they had two 24 hour stretches of no one shot or stabbed.  Almost impossible

One factor is that the NYPD became much better at targeting crime and all the stats being collected meant being a do-nothing cop became much more difficult.

Stop and frisk as well as turning Times Square into NY Disneyland had a significant effect on the murder rate.

EXTRA FUN FACT: Right now (Tuesday October 3, 2017 2:27am) on Discovery ID, there's a show on called "The 1980s: The Deadliest Decade - The Black Monday Murder". The murder in this particular episode happened in Newburgh, NY. I just found it funny considering how one theory as to why murder rates dropped in NYC was how they moved people from NYC to Newburgh, NY.

I used to live near Newburgh. There used to be clubs over there on the Hudson River we used to go to. My ex girlfriend used to work in Newburgh and she had a couple punk ass youths try to open her car door while she was at a red light, and this was early 2000's.

Newburgh is a small place and isn't big enough for all of the NYC trash to be the main reason for the drop in crime but it's still a shitty place.

I went to college in Newburgh. Everyone knew not to go off campus. It made for some great dorm parties. That and 9 girls to every guy.

this

i live by there as well , it is a shithole, unfortunately bc the history and the area are actually very nice

not sure if it is still there, but my friends and i used to take the train and bus up there to skate at the skatepark........we got confronted by a bunch of actual gang bangers, prob around the same age as us at the time 13-14 yrs old.......knives and guns were brandished to us

im sure it wasnt just newburgh, though, lots of NYC trash also moved to places like Monticello, and many other towns in the lower hudson valley

I think it’s mostly from people typing “prayers and thoughts”.

I took a bus from NYC to Newburgh to go see a hardcore show when I was 19. Had no idea what I was doing. Funny seeing the blue collar workers stare at me in the bus thinking wtf is this white boy going upstate for?

I was going to say "abortion", but that seems like only a part of the answer after reading this thread.

No lead in paint and fuel.

Abortions

Aggressive incarceration of minorities
