it is Genki sudo at the westside tournament but I just posted to show as an example because they are other that have this kind of game I am speaking about. (Leo Vieira, camarillos, Tyrone glover, Jeff glover, Marcelo Garcia, Sato, Uno etc)
how do you develop this kind of game? is it natural or can you work on it?
my Bjj is pretty basic and solid (I am 160 pound so not very big) and It would be fun to be a little bit more flashy.
I think it is important to have good bases before doing staff like that.
Roy Jones (who is pretty flashy) said "You have to know thr rules in order to break the rules" In other words you have to be so good at how to do it properly hat you can vary the techniques. Plus it helps a lot if your opponent respects your skills and try to figure out what the heck your doing
I don't think I would personally put Garcia in the Flashy category, maybe for the x-guard stuff but most everything else I would say is basic.
Anyhow, I think the thing these guys all have in common is movement and creativity. be willing to break out of your comfort zone. You can't always get the arm bar from guard the way you were taught it originally. try to find ways to do it yourself. you'll come up with stuff no else has seen before.
You need to have such good fundamentals that you can open up your game a little and take greater risks...when they succeed, you get your flash, and when they fail you have the strong foundation to work back to a position of control.
I would say Mat Pimp is correct, ever notice how flashy you can play your game when your rolling with a newbie? Its because you know your not in any danger if you dont really pull it off, you can usually get back to a safe position and of course sicne their newbies you are more likely to pull the flashy stuff off.
why don't you watch some of the top BJJ, they don't use alot of flashy moves, basics win tournys
if you want to learn some flashy shit check out Bibiano fernades super techs, unreal shit, practice and keep this tucked away for a tourney
