How do you escape from a hybrid North/South and Side Control position?

Maybe I’ll just ask him nicely to stop doing it. jk

My memory is a bit foggy because he hasn’t done it in a while. He doesn’t usually do that because it’s more of a holding position and not his choice finishing position. He was doing it some back when I was focusing a lot on escapes. I focused on some other things for a while and he went back to beating my ass from other positions that are more his “go to”. Now I’m focusing on escapes again so I’m remembering that position from before.

I think his arm is under my head, in the manner that offers crossface.

I use this position so much that it has almost become a crutch. I will switch between this and a traditional north south choke until one sinks in. I hit it so regularly that I tend to transition to something else just so my game can continue to grow. But, if you roll with me, and if we are not in learning mode and I just want the tap and nothing else, this is likely where we are going if it goes my way.

The defense for bottom guy it to turn your face toward my rib cage before it is sunk in. If you don’t, it is going to suck for you.

I’ll ask him to do it again the next time we train and then I’ll make good notes of what he’s doing with his arms. His knees are definitely off the ground and he’s driving into me. So, it’s hard to turn into him, unless maybe I bumped him first?

So, the next time you roll with him and feel him moving to that position, take your your bottom hand and put it on your own face. Literally facepalm yourself. If he triees to put that arm across your face/head, rotate your hand and block his arm with a monkey/C-grip and keep your hand on it (mark his arm). Don’t let him control your head with that arm. That should be goal #1 there. Don’t let him get that arm wrapped around your head.

Thanks. Yeah, he often tells me, in general, to put the one hand up to my head and the other on my chest (so I can take the underhook). I need to take the advice haha.

45 degrees is the perfect time for the shoulder roll escape:

Try get into “sidecontrol” and do your favorite sidecontrol escape.

Thank you for posting this video but the guy on top in the video is light and he’s applying no pressure, and he’s on his knees. The guy on top of me is a big dude who is up on his toes, he’s chest to chest, and he’s driving into me. His body is pretty much planked and parallel to the ground. It would be very difficult to push him up with my arm(s) in order to create the space to get my legs in.

the yuke in the vid happens to be “light” (although I’lm 135 and hes about 160)
this technique works very well on people larger. My entire game is based upon that.

However, from your description if he’s completely flattened on you, then it may be too late. I strongly advise that you look into how you got there. e.g If he’s on your right side, could be feeding his right arm over your shin or something like that.
Also if he’s got a N/S choking arm around your neck, then you messed up your framing earlier.

At that point, the best thing for you to do is to keep safe from a N/S choke and shift into a N/S type escape with a whale tail motion.

I was going to make this thread again but then realized I’d already made it.

I’m watching Danaher’s Pin Escapes instructional again. Just about to start the seventh video out of eight.

Any more tips on how to escape the 45 degree, side control/north south pin would be great.

I am getting better and better at escaping perpendicular, “normal,” side control. If I could change the 45 degree angle back to regular side control, I’d do much better.

I haven’t been rolling with my buddy that puts me in that position. But he’s out there…lurking.

We talking gi or no gi here?

That position is a tricky one. I usually try change the angle to north south and reguard from there, if I’m being lazy. Usually I’ll just go turtle and work from there. I only roll no gi and MMA now though

Check out Gordon Ryan’s videos, he has a series on escaping Side control and North south which addresses your issue.

Gi, but I’m interested in no gi solutions as well, as I might get back to doing some no gi.
