Someone asked me how they should approach new students when they first come to the gym and start training. So I made this video with my opinion.
How do you treat new students when they come in?
Thanks for watching,

I usually treat new students with passive aggression, because a new student should NEVER be greeted by outright aggression.
That's just not professional.
My first BJJ class was everything you said it shouldn't be.
I hog tie them with their white belt

scully,
i find your video kind of off putting. stop trying to tell everyone what to do and what not to do? who the hell do you think you are?!

Great stuff you post on here by the way
When you first roll with a new student: pull guard, take the back and then sing “Blue Bayou” into their ear in as husky a voice as you can muster.

I am still in therapy because of you...Asshole
Actually, that video is a nice reminder that if one has been doing martial arts a while, they can forget what it is like to be a beginner on that first day.
My problem is sometimes I tend to be too casual with new students. I know it's a safe environment, that they will be OK and there is nothing for them to fear, but sometimes I forget to recognize that THEY don't know that.
Good reminder.
BTW, just last night I strapped on a brand new white belt and started a new martial art. I was definitely acutely aware of how I was treated as a new student. I had a lot of fun.
How's ninjutsu working for u shen
It's easy to get jaded and not acknowledge people until I've seen them for a few months.
point and laugh at how they tied their belt.
quietly talk amongst the other color belts..... where is he from, is he sandbagging, does he have a background in Judo or Wrestling, howz his cardio????
watch his matches with other white belts, search for weakness.
After 6 months, teach him the first part of the secret handshake.

Well, Sensei Tanner Says not to discuss the particulars of our training with anyone not directly affiliated with the Bujinkan. (That's how we remain secret and therefore retain the tactical advantage).
I've said too much already.
NICE VIDEO, GREAT POINTS MADE.
It depends. Humbleness equals a nice learning mutual respect. Mr Big Ego gonna be UFC champion in 2 months warrants getting a humblelized butt whooping. Of course, words of encouragement after helps you keep the student and preserve his fire.
Like meat for the grinder?
