It seems like Matt Serra's main focus.
Try holding your breathe. After you start turning blue, start breathing again. I think this will convince you that breathing is pretty damn essential no matter what you do in life.
Well if a fighter (or anyone in a sport) isn't breathing properly, it could be pretty important. But that said, I think serra says a lot of wierd stuff from the corner. I'm not a fighter though so maybe its really good advice. FOOT STOMPS!
So far Serra seems like a pretty damn weird coach...
it relaxes you and helps you to stay alert and focused
Denny's right, without proper breathing and a stragety to go with it, a fighter can tire out quick.
If you are in shape and are not panicking, proper breathing comes naturally,if not...
Matt reminding his fighters to breathe is more of a focusing tool than an instruction,IMO.
When he says "breathe" he is getting their attention focused on the task, not distractions. Sort of like taking them back to training attitude mid-fight.
That, and remembering to breathe is good. Not over rated at all, IMO.
A lot of people use their breathing as a focus point to get their mind on track. And proper breathing control will help with 'longevity' in any athletic contest.
"How important is breathing?"
I heard some folks talking about that shit, isn't that stuff like important for living or something...?
if you dont breath you will die
Breathing should fall into the "no shit" category at
this point for these fightetrs. Mentioning it here
and there is ok but Serra seems to put a little too
much into it. Also telling his guys that they are
doing great the whole fight whether they are or not is
wierd too. Right after his guy eats the knee Serra
is yelling good job?????
I still like him more than Hughes as a personality.
Mad
Breathing is maybe the most important and for sure most overlooked aspect in fighting. Fighters hold their breath use pressurized breathing and so on.
If you really work on your coordination of breathing and movement your skill level will go up about 20-50% of your current game.
Take care

"How important is breathing?"
Very important. I do it almost everyday.
You can probably overcome any breathing-difficulties, or you can avoid being an expert breather if you take steroids instead.
Taking the 'roids is a short cut around learning those less-important aspects of fighting or living.
damn... some of you act as if you never watched Karate Kid II...
