I have a betting thread were I advocated Vera over Marshall because Marshall is probably the only guy at UFC LHW that Vera could beat, and thankfully it ended in a horrible decision because Marshall was beating Vera.
Shogun ain't Reese Andy.
Shogun may have struggled with Coleman and Griffin, but those guys are worlds better than Vera
Great fight!
Completely disagree with OP. When I first heard this fight announce I thought it made perfect sense. Although Shogun is and should be a heavy favorite he can by no means count out Vera.
Vera has the physical ability and skill set to beat Shogun, it's just a matter of him putting it all together and coming into the fight prepared.
Shogun has the ability to coast right through this fight but considering his history I am not counting Vera out here.
If the Shogun that Machida fought shows up it will be a quick night though.
i believe vera is planning on being the first fighter to hold lhw and hw titles at the same time

I'm truly interested in what you've seen from Vera in the last 6 years that's leads you to that conclusion. What skill set? After years of hearing about his great ground game (better than his striking according to Rogan) we've seen him lay on the floor and wiggle like a fish while getting beat up. His striking is excellent when things are going his way and he able to showcase, but against an aggressive guy like Shogun, that won't be the case.
This is going to look like Shogun-Arona and then there will be 1000 Shogun is Back threads, but really he just beat a guy who had no business in the cage with him.
Fedor-Rizzo is a more compelling matchup than this and that stinks on ice.
Why oh why did vera accept this fight, every fighter has ambition but he needs sone steam first some monentum. He loses this fight as is expected, then here does that leave him? Probably without a job
TTTruth

I didn't realize that the Mike Patt fight was March of 2009, I thought it was more recent. That was the last time Vera looked good. This is purely awful matchmaking. It's like they demanded that Joe Silva make the worst main event possible for a FOX event and Fitch and Shields were already booked.
Worst mismatch since Mills McDonald
I would have MUCH rather seen Phil Davis vs Shogun. What happened with that? Phil is available and fighting on the same card.

Main Event: Machida vs Bader
Co-Main: Davis vs Shogun
FUEL TV Prelims/Facebook: Vera vs Wagner Prado
Wonder why they ended up with the fights looking the way they do instead of this. Maybe Shogun didn't want a wrestler?
The match up took me by surprise. I realize neither of them are on a streak lately, but I don't know how Vera deserved that fight.
cool ya self - UFC is looking to help out the FOX ratings by delivering a highlight reel finish... at Vera's expense. And'll it set up Shogun to the casuals for a rematch with Bones.
This fight is to satisfy the just bleed casuals.
I agree with the OP to a certain extent, but Shogun looked ok against Hendos, he'll at least make it to the 2nd against BVera, and that's more than some fighter's, one of which just competed for a Shot at a Title, can say...
wow!!!!! I didnt even know,
2 of my favs always wanted to see this fight.
this will be a good one style wise.
both top strikers
JerseyCityMMA - Why does Vera keep being put on cards????!!Honestly, I don't understand this either. I don't think he's shown enough to hold a roster spot in the UFC, much less warrant a fight against a guy of Shogun's caliber. I'm not trying to bash him, but I think many fighters have been cut for much less and he keeps getting opportunity after opportunity.

Shogun was getting killed against Henderson until Hendo gassed and I have no idea what your point is bringing up Mir/Vera which was eons ago and had Mir coming off of the motorcycle accident. Vera in 2012 is not good.
