How long to get BJJ black belt?

Assuming someone is a gifted athlete who trains 2 or 3 times a week, how many years would you think it would take for them to get a legit black belt? 5 or more years? And is it tougher to get promoted in BJJ as opposed to the more traditional MAs?

Unless you're BJ Penn, plan on 8-12 years.

^ Yup

That sounds about right.

how long did it take Penn?

2-3 times per week is not a lot of training. It's going to take a lot longer for someone if that's all they are putting in.

1 -2 years

Fuck belts...who cares. Drop the gi and just train!

^^^^^^^^^^lifelong whitebelt?

Get ready for a hell of alot of work!! 10 years easy!

5 days, one day for each belt. you get stripes throughout each day.

THE DEAN is correct...

8-12 would be the average these days

"Unless you're BJ Penn, plan on 8-12 years"

*and you beter go more than 2-3 days a week, more like 4-5 days a week for 8-12 years!

The Grappling Blueprint

"5 days, one day for each belt. you get stripes throughout each day."

Actually four days if you consider that you start as a white belt. If you started on Monday you'd get your black belt at the end of day on Thursday. Friday you'd be training as a black belt the whole day.

8-12 is correct

8-12 is correct if you're only training 2-3x a week. That is really not much mat time.

6-10 would be closer to 4-6x a week. Basically anyone who trains this much is very serious about the game and will generally progress faster.

all the black belts get it in under 6 years. The trained around 4 times a week

took Edgar Cano 5 weeks to get his black belt.
