How many Carbs are too many?

For the next couple of weeks I am lowering my Carb intake and running hard, but I'm not sure how much is too much for one item?

Carbs are pretty much necessary for high intensity work. The body can turn protein into glycogen, but that process is inefficient and makes Kermit the Frog sad.

Viva la Rice-istance!

A friend of mine said to get a toned look in a short amount of time, do a lot of cardio and lose the carbs

but u don't want a toned look

you want to work out hard and long and be a pro mma fighter

for this you need energy and you'll get that energy from carbs

It really depends on your genetics, insulin sensitivity (which is greatly affected by your eating and exercise habits), timing, and macronutrient manipulation... it's not as simple as saying eat X grams carbs per day. How you eat them, and when, play a significant role in how they will be metabolized. The junk food you eat, and the alcohol you drink will also play a large role. Educate yourself, and adopt good habits...and over time they'll become second nature. I eat following certain guidlines about 70% of the time (moreso in the summer than in the winter-I have my regular splurges) and am able to maintain a 10% or lower bodyfat percentage year round through this, and I've been doing it for so long it all comes without a second thought.

I'm a big fan of John Berardi's material, he has some excellent books out and you can find many of his articles at johnberardi.com I've had some very good results since adopting some of his dietary practices. Read up son son...

" YOU NEED CARBS TO LIVE"

-respectfully, this is false. you can live off a strict diet of protein and fat. Your body is capable of stripping proteins of their nitrogen in a process called gluconeogenesis, in order to yield glucose.

Do you not consider glucose a carb Herts?

I think what your aiming at is that carbohydrates are non-essential, technically speaking, and in a nutritional sense of the term 'essential.'

doug, in the context of MTG's statement, it was my interperetation he was referring to it being a necessity to consume carbs.

Perhaps, but in that case what he meant and what was actually written were two different things.

lol... the geek in me really comes out on this forum.

Thanks! I will.

Ehhh. All you have is what's written. If he says "you need carbs to live," then he is right. However, if he says "carbs are essential" or "you need to EAT carbs to live," then he is wrong.

My beef is that i expected more geek ot of you, Herts, than that.

Eat as many carbs as you want as long as they don't come from rice...

"respectfully, this is false. you can live off a strict diet of protein and fat. Your body is capable of stripping proteins of their nitrogen in a process called gluconeogenesis, in order to yield glucose. "

Gluconeogenesis makes Kermit the Frog sad. Why waste all of those natural resources to convert a steak into energy when you could just drink some Rice flavored kool-aide?

Rice is the only food group your body actually needs.

Forget about fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals; the body obtains all of these from rice.

Rice does your body good..you should be eating at least 3 pounds or rice per day.

depends on numerous factors such as work volume and intensity, are you a high fat or low fat phenotype, insulin sensitivity, what protein intake look like (protein has a 58% conversion rate to glucose)

highly recommend you read Lyle McDonalds artciel How many Carbohydrates at www.bodyrecomposition.com

What about rice pudding???

Rice pudding, Rice cakes, Rice protein shakes and Rice flavored kool-aide are acceptable supplements.

Make sure you cut down on your protein intake when you are taking this much rice..it can wreck the diet

You people are givING me a headache....

Eat carbs... veggies, fruits, whole grain breads, whole oats.
