How many stripes should I have?

Been training for a year and a month, done 12 tournaments. Try to go to class 2-3x a week. Only a 2 stripe white now, and I'll save you the frat but I should've got my 3rd a while ago. We're a 30 class=1 white belt stripe system. I'm just curious where were some of you all at rank wise at 13 months? We just had a guy get promoted to blue in less than a year, made me curious am I under achieving or should I be where I currently am. Phone Post

i wouldn't worry about stripes on white belt. a lot of times instructors will forget. i would just worry about showing up to class.

There's no possible way for anyone other than your instructor to answer your question accurately.

Stripes, particularly on white belts, are basically meaningless - so don't get too caught up in counting them.

I spent two years at white belt. Then got my purple a year after getting my blue. There's really no ideal timeline for promotion, nor should there be.

Shit, all this time and I only have 3 white stripes, dam.

I wouldn't worry too much about stripes man. Heck, even stop worrying about belts if you can. Just try to improve and they will come.

i have never received a stripe almost 2 yrs to white. I think my coach does this on purpose for me only. I have come to accept this and it has made me focus on getting better at bjj not stripes. One day he just gave me my blue belt. 8 months into blue and i havent received a stripe. Dont think to much about it anymore. Maybe he has forgot about you. But i think it is more likely he has something else he wants you to learn. Not neccessarily bjj related. Like patience. you can learn alot but you have to relax be humble and trust the process.

yes

the blue can be an elusive whore

How many stripes should you have?

Probably as many as your instructor thinks you should have. Phone Post

maybe you are not good enough to be a 3 stripe wb

By the time you are a purple you will be wishing you were still a blue, don't rush it.

What do you train for? To have more stripes than the next guy or because you like BJJ?

FYI if your instructor is like 99% of BJJ instructors they couldn't care less about the color of your little waistband.

I got two stripes put on my blue belt after 1 year, then 1 stripe the next year and got my purple 8 months later.

I stopped worrying about stripes long ago. Just enjoy the journey!!! And trust your instructor. Phone Post

Don't mean to be cocky but this is far from true. Im training with purples every day, starting to sub at open mat. Medaled at every tournament I've ever been too. It's frustrating as shit, everyone tells me not to worry about rank but that's easy to say when you're a purple belt Phone Post

There is an interesting game here.

You are told again and again not to worry about stripes. That being said, you have a goal set in front of you - 30 classes, one stripe. This is an easy and predictable milestone. I happen to know that you sign in every day before class and a computer system tracks your progress. In turn, it alerts your instructor that you have reached your milestone. I think its interesting that you are told to not worry about stripes yet your instructor does and further provides you a convenient metric for tracking your progress.

Most people function best with goals. Further, instructors know as well as we do how hard it is to continue training for long periods of time between belts without some sort of acknowledgment that you're progressing. This is one reason we have belts at all and is the sole reason the stripe system is used. They keep you motivated during the years you'll spend between meaningful promotions. They should be an outward acknowledgment of your improvement. That said, the idea that they can be based on an arbitrary number of classes (30, in your case) pushes them closer toward acknowledging time put in instead of achievement. I once taught a class with a kid who would probably be classified as learning disabled. The same class had a former wrestler, national Karate competitor and current Ph.D candidate in Philosophy. The two students didn't learn at the same rate. Awarding them stripes based on number of classes really doesn't mean the same thing. In your case, maybe the classes you've been too have been sporadic, have repeated lessons, etc. Open mats don't count towards your 30 classes per stripe, either.

Another thing you need to keep in mind is that asking about your ranking, questioning it in any way or especially bitching about it being too low is one of the biggest cultural faux pas you can make in BJJ. Don't do it anymore. If your instructor has over heard you grumbling about it, or god forbid you ask him about it, you can rest assured he, and most other instructors I know, will not be promoting you anytime soon. This isn't out of malice or power trip (I don't think) but because 1. A white belt has no place telling a black belt how he should be ranked and 2. you need to develop the discipline to keep training despite the fact that he hasn't patted you on the back lately. If that's what you're after, I'll give you a stripe. This is exactly how one of my old training partners became a 17-stripe white belt.

Buck up, strap on your two-stripe white belt and come train tomorrow night. You're one of the biggest guys at the gym and at tournaments so you're going to have to put in extra work to prove you're technically worthy of promotions. If you don't want to push yourself mentally, physically and emotionally, stay home.

^^^ Good Post !!

+1

Northside, you seem like you have the answer to your question already. Okay, so what are you going to do about? Not much. Nothing you can really do, even if you brought it up the instructor he will probably wait another 6 months to promote you just to teach you a lesson(it's the instructor's responsibility to worry about rank, not the student). I've seen my instructor do this multiple times(lol).

Just accept where you are at and don't trip on it buddy. You sound like you're doing good, just keep it up.

EM = VTFU if I could from my phone Phone Post

Evan, great post! And only 13 posts in, that goes to show the post whores that it is all about quality, not quantity!!!

THat is cocky. You might be subbing purples but it could all be with a specific part of game. You may be a brown belt level guard guy but have the worst top position of any white belt around. Don't presume too much man. When you get to a certain point, you will have a realistic assessment of your skills, but you are still so new to the game that you are probably missing out on a lot what your instructor thinks you need to know.
