How much do you spend on BJJ every year?

Bumped into a black belt friend who is an avid competitor.  He told me he spends all (obviously exaggerating) his money on BJJ and told me what he spends it on (comps, instructional, etc.) I was blown away.  Especially because he has a wife and two kids!

What do you guys spend yearly?  Average the last three years:  tuition, gis, comps, ibjjf membership, travel, seminars, instructionals, on line subscription, privates, gear, etc.

3.5k-5k per year I'm guessing but that includes training for me and my son, along with his comps and my gis (he gets my hand me downs)

Really cool you get to share a hobby with your kid. I hope to do the same some day.

btw I wasn't shocked at my friend spending that much money on his hobby and passion.   People spend a ton on their hobbies. I have a friend who collects amps and electric guitars and spends ridiculous money.  I was more shocked because my wife would've killed me. just curious what the average expenses were for the avg bjjer.

About $3,000-$5,000 a year. I have a wife and kid. I don’t compete anymore.

I have been doing it less than 6 months, so upfront costs are a little higher

But for my son and I:

$1,500/year for monthly due

$180 total for his gi and mine

Approx. $350 for my no gi stuff (1 pair of spats, 3 rashguards, 2 fight shorts)

I expect I’ll buy him another gi this year since he is 9 and will grow. And I might add a second for me. And if he ever wants or needs a rashguard, if I decide I want more, I figure gear cost will probably be $200/year or more on average.

It is about 13 miles round trip to train and we train 4-6x/week (we both go 2-3 times each) so 52 to 78 miles which is 2-3 gallons per week, and it is somewhere around $250 year on gas (which is WAY less than when he did travel soccer. One weekend would easily be a couple hours each way)

So my rough total would be $2,000/year or so. And that is for both of us. I have no plans to do any tournaments, he may do 1-2 a year but only something local in our city so no travel.

And compared to him doing travel soccer this is really cheap plus we both get to train. And once he is a little older we can start training together, hopefully. Gear costs will go up but gas costs will go down.

About a pint worth of blood.
