How much to swap engine

Looking at getting a used Ford excursion 2004 diesel.

I Want to know how much  approx would it cost to 1) buy new/used engine 6.0 diesel

2) have someone install it for me in the truck

The vehicle in looking at already had an engine rebuilt ....I  just wanted to know what would be the approximate costs if I ever had to do this again

Car guys?

I assume a used engine could be purchased for around $2500 and maybe that again for installing?

$5000 sound reasonable?

Someone I work with just spent (pick d it up this past weekend) between $7-8k for a Ford Expedition motor. Pretty sure it was a V-6 and I think it was a 2008-2010. The engine died about five hours from his house and he took it to a Ford dealership.

Someone in the office said he could have got it done for around 4K if it happened closer to where he lived. The he was figuring 2.5k for an engine and the remaining for install.

Hope that hat helps a bit.

Actually any insight is appreciated....my knowledge doesn't go much farther than changing a tire.

I want to try and understand the  potential costs

a decent used Excursion diesel engine is going to run you a minimum of 4-5K. throw some mods on it and you're looking at another 1-2K.

i'd budget at least 10k.

The honest answer is 'it depends'.

Shop installation you could expect 12h labour (approx) which would cost about $1200.  Add space for parts you don't expect (wiring, turbo parts, engine accessories), and ones you do - like full fluids, belts, mounts, and you're probably around $2500 for install.

If you're looking to swap an entire engine from a junkyard truck, then you might be able to get it all done for $5K.  The caveat is you won't know really how much time you have left on the engine other than by guesswork from mileage.

If you're looking to source a freshly rebuilt long block (including heads), then you're going to be around $6,000-7,500.   You'll then need to figure out what you can reuse from your existing engine - like manifolds, turbo, alternators, power steering pump etc.  That will get you into the $12K mark before you know it.

ultimately this.

without a bunch of details it's almost impossible to give an accurate number here. i've seen junk yard engines for excursions go for as little as 1500 bucks. a cheap remanufactured engine is going to 4-5K, a good one is 6-8K. add in all the extra stuff you're going to do while you have the engine out and it's at least another 1500-2500. now add in labor and you're at 10K

Only buy a 6.0 if you enjoy setting money on fire.    Two of my neighbors had them.  $18,000 ta piece for new motors in them before 120,000 miles.  I know five other guys who blew them before 150k and sold them broken.

They are junk.    Now people will say I’m dumb and they just need new studs and shit deleted etc etc.

Nope, it’s a shitty motor that needs a shit load of money spent on it just to keep it from having catastrophic failures.

Outside of local junkyards, are there any well known used engine vendors that someone can recommend? Also how about some Japanese engines?

I had two ford focus hatches a while back. One with a beat up body and great engine and the other with blown engine but great body.

A buddy did the engine swap for $700 and he keeps the beat up focus and blown engine.

Took him four days.

He was a somewhat friend not close or anything so maybe he gave me a discount of $300? Or maybe he needed the tranny out of the focus he kept.

Seemed really fair considering another place asked for $1300.

Idk if a diesel engine is more expensive though and it probably varies by location.

Great info!

Thank you

the 6.0 is VERY labor intensive to r&r,  basically the entire front body work has to be removed.  expensive

properly modified, the 6.0 is very powerful and reliable

*Paging GHTT_burnedupwagon133!*

I put a new motor in my car but forgot to take the old one out. Now my car does 300 miles per hour.

According to the seller the motor was sent to georgia and had the power stroke specialty guys bulletproof the engine 30,000 miles or 3 yrs ago. Since then it's had new warn hubs, aluminum rad, a/c compressor and more.

That's what I heard.

The first year 2003 was full of issues but once modified (bullet proof) it's supposed to be a great

This is one on those projects that might be priced out at 8k and turn into 12k or more. Not to be an ass but the 6.0 is probably the worst diesel ever made. Supposedly the ‘bullet proofed’ stuff is good but could be a crap shoot. My buddy bought a 6.0 brand new off the lot. Went through the first set of heads at around 30k miles. By 50 thousand miles it fully grenaded. He traded it in for next to nothing on a duramax

R&R figure on removing the cab and front body work

replacement motor 5-7k used, more new

6.0 I would not buy used, better off having a specialty shop rebuild and eliminate the common problems.

That said if you buy new, follow warranty procedures to the letter. If they want a clown faced tranny to change your oil while singing old McDonald, do it get a receipt and take video lol

I had someone replace a motor in a truck. I supplied the motor. Paid him $1200 + the blown motor

I swapped an engine in my mini cooper for 3700 , that was also replacing the water pump a few hoses and I believe a motor mount. Can't really compare the two tho.
