How old?How long?

Couple of questions I hope you guys can help with. I've got a kickboxing background but have the chance to take up wrestling, & want to. How long do you think would you need to train before you can compete? (I know longer would be better, but could you get a basic game together in say 12 months hard training?)
Secondly, how old is too old? What age is do most people stop competing at, at anything more than just mat time at a club?

Thanks in advance

I would have to say that most people probably end their wrestling career after high school or college. The number of high school wrestlers across the country is astounding, but most don't make it past there.

As far as how long it takes to become proficient, it really is all up to the individual. However just with any sport, experience plays a large role in being able to be successful. 12 months would be a good period to be able to grasp all the concepts and be adequate on the mat.

I've wrestled the past 8 years and got "good" after about 2 or 3, and my past 2 years have been wrestling at a high level.

However one thing that you should NOT pass up is the opportunity to train and learn the sport. It really is an amazing art.

Many thanks. Another, probably stupid question:

I spent a little time training judo, and they make a big issue over breakfalls. I just don't see this in wrestling - why?

stop after high-school? Feh... I'm 32 and I'm just getting ready to jump back into wrestling. :-)

Just paid up my USAW membership yesterday and looking forward to the coming season... there is no such thing as "too old."
