How Thin and Still be Strong?

I am asking for help with a body weight question. I am 48 180 5'9" somewhat muscular build. I would like to compete in the Pam American games in Apr 2010 BJJ. What is the lowest body weight I could reasonably get to. Is 150 unrealistic?

What percent body fat are you?

I don't know for sure I would guess 15%

I was at 172 about a month ago and my wife said I was too thin. When I compare myself to fighters at the gym it is clear to me I still have fat to lose.

30 lbs. is a lot, but I suppose if you could lose like 15-18 and then cut the rest, it'd be possible, but it won't be a whole lot of fun, and there's no guarantee that you'll be able to maintain your current level of strength.

Not to mention that weight loss and a cut of that nature would probably leave you pretty close to "empty", with not much margin for error or room to spare, physically, imo.

You could give it a shot, but around January or so, I'd stop and take a realistic view on your progress and to see if it's really being that much of a benefit to your performance.

Weight cutting and being the bigger, stronger guy is great in theory, and when done by those who have it down pat, can pose a significant advantage, but it can also be disastrous for those who aren't used to it.

I cut like 16 lbs. one time for a competition and completely cramped up and shut down not even 2 minutes into my first match, and was following the advice to the "t" of those who had done it many times before.

If you can't get to within reasonable earshot of 150 by say, February or so, like I said, you may want to reconsider.

iirc for the pan ams you will weight in shortly beofre you compete which will deter anyone from cutting a significant amount of water weight.  so you're looking at 5-7lbs. max.

Yeah, and I believe that if you miss the weight, you are immediately disqualified, without the option of competing in another weight class.

I've always felt my best weight is around 155-165 in terms of overall strength and endurance. Above that and I'm not as explosive, below that I'm not as strong but I am a better runner.

So where have you felt the most comfortable in the past?

Thank you for the information. I know I can get down to 167 weight in my gi. The next step down is like 154 in the gi. I will get to 160 by the end of Nov and take a hard look at it. Once again thanks.

I think I feel good at 170 but I got there without much intent. I simply was working out more. I have never intended to get below 170. This will be my first try. I recently competed in a Guns and Hoses boxing match where I had to weigh 180 which for me is walking around weight.

48?

damn - that's amazing!

Thanks Figure Four. I just enjoy training. My guess is that you like figure 4's?

Here is a link. I get tooled in the first round and come back to win the next two. I am a BJJ guy not a boxer. The guy was 10 years younger and hit a lot harder! It was a great time, We raised big bucks for charity!
