How to deal with new guy spaz?

We have some new guys in our academy that are sort of crazy. When you get them in a position where it is obviously checkmate, they continue to struggle and try to use as much muscle as possible to get out of the position. I am not sure how to handle someone like this. Any ideas?

For example last night I'm rolling with a guy who is fairly strong, probably stronger than I am. I can tell he's a little nervous so I just pull guard and start attacking. Eventually I see an opportunity for the Omaplata and go for it, I have it fairly locked in but then he does some sort of Hulk Hogan maneuvre and screams like hes squatting 1000lbs and tries to muscle out of it. Then we scramble and I get side control and go for the americana, again, its tight and I torque it slowly but strong to the point where I thought his shoulder was going to snap and yet he still doesn't tap so I let up a little and then he muscles out of it and gets to the top. Then I throw up an armbar, its tight but he refuses to tap again. So I just hold him there as he squirms around and finally just torque way harder than necessary during training till he taps. Normally I would not do that but with this type of opponent I feel my risk of injury is higher from him constantly spazzing out.

after hurting a few guys because i kept applying more pressure on joint locks, i've figured out it way easier and safer to just choke these guys until they get rid of their ego. you can fight an armbar but you cannot fight a choke.

I choke them with as little effort as possible to show them what jiu jitsu is all about, Im only 145 pounds so it really gets my point across...

OK so you think forget about joint locks, just go for the chokes

If possible work to flatten him out from back mount. I think that is one of the most humbling positions in jiu-jitsu. As far as joint locks most tough guys learn after a while to tap earlier. It's natural to keep trying to escape to the last possible moment. It usually leads to a couple weeks of sore elbows and shoulders after that they seem to learn.

How advanced you are might play as well. I let go of joint locks on whites and blues once I know I would have finished it. This allows me to simulate the transition from a failed sub.

Had a guy last nite that elbowed me in the side of the head, between jaw and ear. Now can't chew.

So I lapel choked him from closed guard.

Even when I started I didn't resort to strikes. Phone Post

I feel like when people complain about ' spazzing ' they are complaining that the person didn't give up when they wanted them too.

He used strength to get out not technique so in my eyes you need more work on that technique. BJJ guy ( including myself ) accept more than you think. We could fight a takedown but nope we are jiu jitsu guys so we go right now yet the wrestler or a normal guy might fight his hardest to not get taken down because he's not conditioned to do so.

So we accept submission. Do you tap fr chokes because if you didn't you would pass out? Or you tap because you think he has it? I know I don't like shoulder locks so I tap before it happens. In conditioned to tap when I could fight on.

If wrestling training partners have taught me anything it's to not accept things.i don't accept sweeps, grips, positional controls or takedowns and it made my guy a lot better.

So my point is we call guys a spazz for muscling out when in reality you need to get better at that move. Phone Post

i ride them around the mat the whole class. Make them waste as much energy as possible until i can no longer hold the position with ease then transition. I had this problem today. Guy is a blue belt muscle head. I talked to him after class told him if he wants to get better stop trying to "win" with force. I hope he listens he has already jacked my ankle up once.

though this could be the case in a few cases, i don't believe it's the case most of the time. usually, when someone is complaining about a spazz, it's because they are a bit more advanced than the spazz. advanced guys don't muscle a technique nor do they try to tear the arm off. they apply the technique and know whether they have it or not. i know if i have the arm bar....i'm not going to tear your arm off to prove i had it. i'm going to let it go because, as a former spazz, that's what the upper level guys did for me until i learned proper technique. if they wanted to, they could have aggressively applied the hold and made me tap...but that's not what a good partner does. i love being on the mats. if someone rolls with me like it's adcc, i will not roll with them anymore. i want to come back tomorrow and train again. that's why the choke is the safe option if you continue to roll with the spazz. tire him out and take his neck.

the back mount position comment brings up a good point. getting them in a compromising position has a good effect. another is the double under pass. I put both their ankles over the head on the ground. when they force they then let out a face of pain when they realise how little they can do. doing a sitting mount with their arm tied around their head and pulling up. I can dial up the spaz to match most new guys and just beat them at their own game, but I try not to. My new strategy is to sub them really quick a bunch of times within the first minute or so, especially with simple chokes. That normally flicks the switch in their heads that says, "spazzing is pointless".

Once I see that light go on, I work with em.

So I am rolling with a blue, I don't like to smash people so I sweep get side mount, and let him get guard I pass mount let him get guard back. I do it effortlessly while he works so hard so I think its obvious to the guy. Instructor says take downs and let your partner take you down, he says something like "payback" or some shit, and goes for a Royce kick to a double I sprawl light he falls. We practice choked and he was going hard I told him go light, he hurts my neck can't swallow all week.

Today I roll with him I said what's up man, I am as easy going as it gets, I jump guard triangle to mount, let him roll upside down armbar before I rip it off I let go, he yells at me I didn't tap. I day sorry didn't want to jack you up. I am.kind of pissed now clock choke him hard almost wanted to put him out but decided to let it go. He walked right out of the gym.

This was at 6pm today. Lol Phone Post

Ill tell you how I handle the new guy spazzzz , SMASH .Learn some respect fucker !!

Use BJJ to control the situation without injuring a less experienced student. We all know who these guys are who complain about spaz's: big ego egotistical guys who don't compete and always want to roll with less experienced students provided they "are not too big" or "don't use too much strength. Phone Post

Well ido don't know about calling people spazes because you can't control them, th just want people to train hard and smart a dude doing Royce Gracie kick takedowns is a spaz.

I mean wtf is that shot.

I don't want together injured for no reason he felled for an ankle on me too, doubt he had a clue how to finish it so if I was a blue or a white I prob would end up with a broke ankle. I have seen it many times. Phone Post

I'm sorry but bullshit. I have no ego I'm just trying to be able to play with my kid the next day and come back to class that week and keep learning. If I get injured because of a moron thinking its a fight to the death that's fucked. Phone Post
