How to Train for Hockey Fights???

This is great.

Hey Eric, who did you play for in the NAHL?

Brett

bjjprim8 - Well, again, that's your opinion. At 15, the league rules state that you must at all times wear your headgear. Dropping the headgear to fight would be a suspension of more than one game.

Fighting = game suspension.

Dropping headgear to fight = min of 5 games suspension.

We pay to pay. I have no problem taking a game for fighting but 5 games and serious injury at 15 years old? No, I disagree. Anyone who has had his head rocked even in a helment knows that it's not a pillow fight.

I would say that running a guy on open ice is waaay cheaper than fighting with a cage on.

If I was in a semi-pro league with chances to go further or being paid to play it would be different.

We had guys who felt the need to drop gloves and fight in recreational hockey who got the boot for lots of games at the age of 30 for crying out loud.

We used to laugh at them. They paid to play and they sit out for tons of games because they felt they had to be a tough guy.

There is a time and a place for that stuff for sure but most guys don't know when that is.

As for cutting the thumb out of the cage, it allows for head control if you can't grab the jersey.

Again, I disagree with your assesment. If you're talking OHL/AHL or NHL then I would agree. Otherwise, no.

My cousin used to be a goon in the NHL and when I asked who was the hardest guy to fight he replied with a very unexpected answer considering he tussled with all the big names... Darren Langdon.

That's very interesting. I have a great picture on my wall of Langdon and Tony Twist at the start of a fight. They both have a good hold on each other, and you can still see a glove (about waist high) that is on it's way to the ice. I'll bet that was a great fight.

Dougie,

Number one there is nothing cheap about lining someone up who has the puck for a hard open ice hit with a little bit of a high elbow. It sends a message a hell of a lot better than playing gladiator.

Two, what mens league is having you sit for more than one game for a fight? USA Hockey run leagues all over the country follow the one game for a fight rule. Chelsea piers in NYC which has some of the stiffer rules in the country only gives one game.

As for being 15, again like I said you guys were playing make pretend, because it's pretty stupid to get suspended for ONE game for doing nothing but hitting a cage. What message is sent by that? None, as for paying to play at 15, then I guess you weren't playing high school hockey you were playing rec league hockey.

You laughed at guys who were man enough to fight for real and get suspended, whlile you got suspended for playing make pretend LMAO.

That right there says it all your interest wasn't in fighting or should I say isn't. Your interest is to come as close to a real fight as possible without getting hurt. It's nice to play make pretend, I stopped doing that when I was a kid.

I ahve said my peace.

"Number one there is nothing cheap about lining someone up who has the puck for a hard open ice hit with a little bit of a high elbow. It sends a message a hell of a lot better than playing gladiator."

Ok. That I can agree with. I thought you were talking about lining up a guy from behind etc. To me that's running a guy. Hard open ice hits with intent I have no problem with. Keep your head up I always say.

"what mens league is having you sit for more than one game for a fight? USA Hockey run leagues all over the country follow the one game for a fight rule. Chelsea piers in NYC which has some of the stiffer rules in the country only gives one game."

I'm in Canada. We've had huge break downs on rules lately to try and end a serious epidemic of overuse of voilence in hockey as of late.

They are trying to steer rules towards the game rather than fighting. I think fighting is an important part of the game but they want a generation of players who play more than fight.

Yeah, I agree that at that age it's not really fighting per say but it is a good lead up on how to defend yourself.

I was playing competitive high school hockey and at the time they had just started putting zero tolerance rules in effect and went heavy handed at first and I think they may have lightened up a bit since. After high school though I did go to rec hockey as I wasn't skilled or big enough to continue in a league that competitive.

"You laughed at guys who were man enough to fight for real and get suspended, whlile you got suspended for playing make pretend LMAO."

Uh no. These guys who were fighting who we were laughing at were the 30 something guys. They knew what they were going to do in rec hockey would put them out for a period of time and did it anyway. More ice time for those of us who wanted to play.

The fighting with cages we did 15 years earlier. I think you are confusing the two time frames.

"That right there says it all your interest wasn't in fighting or should I say isn't. Your interest is to come as close to a real fight as possible without getting hurt. It's nice to play make pretend, I stopped doing that when I was a kid."

This isn't personal. I was just stating what I felt.

At the younger age the cages are in use for a reason. I state that at this age yes, it's getting people understanding how hockey fighting is without too much damage.

As they get older and the cages go they have some experience and not just throw to the wolves.

Cheers!

bjjprim8, let me apologize, I responded to your post with a attacking post of my own and that wasn't right. I will go back an amend it. Again, my apologies.

learn to skate better

LOL!  This thread absolutely rules!

Great clips.

You should stick some gloves and cage on Bubba and make an instructional DVD "BJJ for the Ice".

LOL. Bubba can probably skate better than I can.

ice= no leverage = girly punches= the reason no one ever gets ko'd = stop pretending french ballerinas are tough. thanks for your support.
