How Wrestling&Family Got Hendricks Past Heartbreak

Latest exclusive for FOX Sports, if you're into that type of thing...

Ask Johny Hendricks (16-2) a meaningful question and he won't just tell you what's on his mind and in his heart, the Oklahoma-born wrestler will probably show you. Take, for example, his post-fight interview with Megan Olivi backstage (below) after his controversial decision loss to Georges St. Pierre (25-2) in Nov. 2013.

Hendricks appeared to have won at least four rounds of the five-round main event against the long-time welterweight king. However, when Bruce Buffer read the judges' scores, they gave the fight to GSP.

Afterwards, Hendricks defiantly said he felt he had deserved to win, but still couldn't help but wear his devastated emotions on his sleeve. "They ripped my heart out. It sucks," he said, before getting a little choked up.

"[I've got to] go home, get better, you know...I don't really know how much better I can get, but that's the mystery."

Training and committing your life for years to reaching a certain point, then doing exactly what you had prepared to once you got your shot, only to have others take it away from you. It's the type of gutting experience that many athletes can't ever fully bounce back from.

Fortunately for Hendricks, he'd already had experience in that type of situation before. "It happened in my senior year in college," Hendricks tells FOX Sports, when asked if he'd ever had such a disappointing experience in his life prior to losing the St. Pierre fight.

"I lost my last match. When you think you're doing everything right and all of the sudden you lose, it's tough to come out of it. You can't explain why you lost or what you need to do different."

Good to know...thanks for the bump

Thanks SGPB! Always appreciate the support!

Never leave it in the hands of the judges.

NO he is 100% right.

Judges thought GSP won, many people who rewatched the fight won.

I personally thought Hendricks won 3-2 when i first watched the fight, but haven't re watched it to confirm.

"appeared to have won at least 4" is a laughable statement at the best, so you're saying he won 4 or 5 rounds in a fight he probably won 2 or 3.

Be honest OP did you really watch the GSP/Hendricks fight?

Here we go again. I just re-watched the fight again yesterday. Still thought he got 1, 2 , and 4. Round 1 is the one in question. I still say Hendricks though.

But F that, it just feels like the dudes who complain about it are complaining about the decision that GSP won. I don't even care anymore. Hendricks has the belt now at least for the next 24 hours. It all works out. Phone Post

Yes, it appeared to me that Hendricks won rounds 1-4, handily. Some agree, some disagree. This discussion has been had.

If you all want to keep having it and bumping the story, that's fine. If you want to read what a UFC champ has to say about the lowest points in his athletic careers, how he recovered from them, and also how he used his mind to overcome injury in the cage, read what Johny has to say.

Or you know, keep on masturbating to your own comments...either way

^^

Wow, professional response. I read your terrible article, and I wish I hadn't. I'll be sure not to make that mistake in the future. Last thing I would want to give a guy like you is more page views.

Your "story" was a straight up stroke piece. People are sick as hell of hearing Hendrix complain about this decision, especially because he HAS THE BELT.

I liked the article, but your comment is pretty shitty, especially since you're factually wrong here.

"Hendricks appeared to have won at least four rounds of the five-round main event against the long-time welterweight king. "

That statement implies there was near universal consensus that it was 4-1 Hendrix, when there was nothing of the sort. Most had it 3-2 Hendrix, some had it 3-2 GSP, almost no one (except yourself, and 7.2% of fan voters) had it 4-1 Hendrix.

So, I see you all went with the jerk each other off talking about the GSP/Hendricks result instead of checking out the psychology of one of the best fighters in the world, huh? haha. Well, I appreciate the bumps. Keep on whapping, guys

I'm a big GSP fan and had it a draw. After re-watching, I gave it 3-2 GSP based on the 5 rounds rules. It was super close.

"Hendricks appeared to have won at least four rounds of the five-round main event"

What did you expect with such a statement? You side with Hendricks and make it seem you think he was "robbed" like he claim he was. Which is not true to the vast majority. Why make that point at all?

You could have easily just said it was a controversial decision, which it was.

Not sure I will read, Elias has a knack for writing about topics I don't give a fuck about, just reading his headline you know it's gonna suck. Can't put my finger on what it is exactly.

arnanderson - Wait, so the "heartbreak" in this story is him losing a MMA fight? LOL! I was expecting to read about a family member or close friend dying. This kind of makes him and the author look like whiners.

Same, I thought I was going to read about some family tragedy, which would have been OK.

I hear ya but If a man says he's heartbroken, I'll take his word for it. I didn't call it a "tragedy," I just recounted to professional heart breaks of Hendricks' in his own words. It isn't hard to see how someone's whole identity and life and relationships are tied up into their passions and livliehoods, as is the case in this one. So yeah, if he says he was gutted and heart broken from those career set backs, who am I to say otherwise?

Haha, oh please, please keep me posted on if you do end up reading...Just got done interviewing Stipe Miocic while sitting in a Vegas buffet and now prepping to head to the UFC 181 weigh-ins but I may choose to wait here with breath baited to see if you decide to read this story, instead. There's just something about your evaluation that I pin my entire mood, and day on. Can't put my finger on what it is exactly.

Oh UG, I can't never quit ya. Been here since high school, and I'll stay here

Lol, dude. This is the part where you admit you were wrong, not where you double down on barely provoked douchiness after getting called out on a pretty clearly incorrect assessment.

But whatever. I didn't give you a click so it's no skin off my nose.

I scored it 4 rounds to 1 for Hendricks. You disagree. Is there a reason you can't get over the fact that someone else disagrees with you?
