When the marines are trained in hand to hand combat, the point is not to put them in a position to compete with professional fighters, the point is to quickly teach them some effective and easy to use techniques.
I wouldn't expect any of these guys or their instructors to do well against a professional fighter. Pro fighers train in hand-to-hand combat for hours each day, these people do not.
I guess the reason why people think they should have to give it a shot is because of some of the statements that are made ("Couture would end up dead in a no rules fight"). To me, that's just testosterone yapping, not reality.
the main point was marines fight as a unit not one on one similar to krav maga in most fights marine units are outnumbered and must fight as a team which is what MCMAP instructors kept emphasizing through the show. I doubt that a marine trained in just MCMAP or LINE would win the ufc championship but I would rather have a brother with me in a streetfight than any ufc competitor.
Bill was totally owning the champ. And Bill isn't particularly agile. He had to penalize himself for 3 points mid fight by picking up the guy about 6 inches from side mount and lightly slamming him several times for the point deduction. There was no reason to do that in MMA or wrestling. Bill did it so the guy could catch up on points. If they have Bill and Jason humiliating the champions and winning, then it kind of invalidates the whole hour on the effectiveness of the style they just covered. As it is, they dominate them enough to make it kind of embarassing.

I agree, but it would be good TV to see those yapping Marine tough guys get a reality check. but, maybe they were yapping because they knew they'd never have to back up their boasts.
With a haircut that makes you look like a retard had his way with your head you have to lie to yourself a little to feel tough. Would you want Jason to make the guys cry, you cruel bastards?
"they have an image to protect. It was smart by them"
Marine image = bullshit & coverup?
If they came clean and just said from the start, "We only train hand-to-hand as a last resort and therefore it's not that effective against a trained mma guy," I could respect that.
Hey, at least everyone I know doesn't make fun of my retard hair behind my back, unlike each and every marine. The few, the proud, the hideously groomed.

who said any different? they are rifleman first, not MMA fighters. If you want to test them out, go find one, tell him you can kick his ass and see what happens, I'm sure they will be down to find out...oh, and they're prolly not real concerned if you respect them or not though.
Staff sergeant Wyman is a pro fighter. he was the guy teaching them the rolling kneebar.he was an instructor at one of the training schools I went through.
Whats the point of doing an episode about the martial art if they never expect to use it?
Every episode so far has had sparring at the end and a chance to see some form of live competition. Surely there was someone who was willing to spar, there really is no catastrophic outcome if a marine lost on a tv show.
