I am Legally Blind W/O My Glasses

Just found out the other day. With glasses I can see well enough to live normally, but over time my sight will continue to decline. My condition can be corrected with surgery to replace my lenses and corneas, but the Surgeons I have spoken with say they want to put it off as long as possible in the hopes that if we can buy another 5-10 years in glasses, medical technology will be better and they will have more options. My glasses now cost over $1K a pair because of the special kind of lenses I need to have made.

honestky, I’m very thankful that I am in a position that allows me to get the glasses I need without struggling. I’m also very happy to live in a country in which we have access to very talented and brilliant Physicians to treat us. If socialism happens, these conditions will cease to exist.

What’s the standard to be considered legally blind?  My vision is around 20/400+ without glasses or contacts but about 20/25 with them.  Without correction, I can’t see shit though.

Shut up, nerd.

i feel you on the eyesight problems. i nearly lost an eye in the sixth grade. since then, my eyes have basically traded being the worse of the two in a slow race to blindness. sucks -- almost no one else in my family needs glasses. my dad had better than 20/20 vision and he's in his 80's.

i'm forty and unless surgical measures are taken, i'll be blind by 60.

worst part is that it hit my right eye, so i had to unlearn being right-eye dominant. i can play baseball and golf either way and can hit a two-handed forehand in tennis that's just like a lefty hitting a two-handed backhand. unfortunately, it sucks for archery and shooting, which i love. i shoot compound bows right handed and recurves left handed. lifelong pain in the ass.

I had cataract surgery with lens implants about 10-12 years apart. The left eye (done first) was a horrible experience. They actually strapped a little rubber ball tightly to my eye to sqeeze out the vitreous humor before proceeding. I had to wear a metal patch for a month. It hurt for several days. Conversely, the right eye done later was a walk in the park. No pain, no patch, no stitches, no worries. The idea of waiting has a lot of merit. Surgical procedures of all types are advancing very rapidly.

Same here. Only a few places in the country make my rx in contacts but it doesn't matter because I'm not willing to pay what they charge.

Are you extremely near sighted or far sighted?  Why not do lasik?

20/200 is considered legally blind.

I’m a little bit worse than you are. I am good to go with my glasses but without them I’m considered blind for legal purposes.

Whats the strength of the sphere and cyl? and what type of lenses do you go with? It's really easy to get ovder $1,000 for glasses without vision insurance.

I have keratotonus, so I’m not a candidate for lasik. I have astigmatism, as well as degeneration of the cornea.

When you take off your glasses does your sense hearing or smell dramatically increase? Are you a super hero otherwise?

I have to find my papers to be certain. Can’t remember off the top of my head. Doc says she thinks I’ll be ok with glasses for a few more years. She said if we can go another 5 years or so, that would be great.

You are probably a candidate for corneal cross linking.   I'm looking into it myself due to fluxuations from radial keratotomy surgery in the 90's.  It's minimally invasive.

are you around a -15.00 or so? This is my wheelhouse right here...i've seen some patients come through with a rx as high as -32.00

While I sympathize with your challenges with the progression of keratoconus, and do agree that the US definitely has some of the leading eye clinics and ophthalmologists in the world, it’s simply not true that excellent prescription or surgical treatment options do not exist outside of your border.

In fact, I would challenge you to find a ‘first world’ country where good treatment options do not exist, and in many cases would be subsidized in the absence of private health insurance coverage.

Are you rich enough to hire a hooker as a seeing eye dog?

I thought I was bad at -6.5 left eye and -8 right eye.  I can't imagine what it would be like to be -15 or - 30.
