I don't want stripes

Would it be disrespectful to my instructor if I stripped my 2 stripes off?

I'm fine with just white. They really don't mean jack squat to me.

I think if you respect your teacher, you will wear whatever he gives you- belt or stripes.

I guess I went to a much larger school and it opened my eyes. I don't feel like I deserve the stripes. Not trying to be an azz.

It's great that we have BJJ in a small town.

Doesn't matter what you feel. Your instructor ranks you as they see fit, not the other way around. So just take it graciously and go train.

apparently not humbled at all

The problem is more that you claim they don't mean anything but you have an attachment/fixation to removing them. If they didn't mean anything to you you wouldn't have a problem either way.

When you get to blue belt are you going to post on here that you went to another school and didn't feel like you deserved your blue? Purple? Brown? Black?

There are people at every belt level and even beneath your belt level that will be always better than you and no more than you, no matter how much you train, so according to your logic, you will NEVER be able to wear any belt - problem solved!!

You grow into your promotions. They are a catalyst that propel you forward. Phone Post 3.0

Ari logic?

I took my stripes off when I switched schools, but why would you take them off if you're still training under the instructor who gave them to you? That's real retarded, sir.

^That's some high level wisdom right there^ Wear your stripes, it's a long journey.

If stripes did not matter to you it would also not matter to have them on your belt. But if you want an easy way out just wash your belt a few times and as they fall off on their own don't say anything about it.

I know a lot of guys we have no stripes on the about purely because they wash their belt all the time Phone Post 3.0

I don't use stripes at my academy. I actually don't even use belts with rank bars. Bc it doesn't matter. They are like advantages, or gold stars. Stripes don't dictate knowledge or skill. You dictate knowledge and skill. Phone Post 3.0

If you don't think you deserve the stripes get on the mat and earn them in your own mind. Phone Post 3.0

If they don't mean jack squat to you, then just wear them.

Because they obviously mean something to your instructor.

Don't be one of those guys who want to be his own teacher and decides what rank he is. How could you know? Phone Post 3.0

I don't like stripes either but OP I think you are coming from a very different place.

I think stripes are really important at the white belt level because it keeps you motivated and it shows your progress even if you can't see it. I think once you get to blue belt you are no longer an utter novice and should be setting your own goals and aspirations for training and competing.

It's crazy sometimes how butt hurt people get over a couple of bits of tape around a belt. I haven't had any stripes since white belt and I'm a purple now. It's almost like these other distractions belt colours, stripes and other peoples skills are distracting people from being the best they can actually be. Just my two cents.

Oh my instructor off handily tells people to add a stripe to their belt. I just don't get around to doing it and I don't think they really care. Phone Post 3.0

A lot of you guys are exactly right. Hotsteppa I did not really view it like like that, but you are right. I was comparing myself to others who are better and not my own progress.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll now SHUT UP AND TRAIN!

I don't care about stripes, and to be honest I don't like belts? I think they get in the way of learning, a little bit, and to be honest I really miss that aspect of just wrestling/no-GI (just show up and train, and there's none of the "imma get this guy he's higher rank than me", or "fuck tapping to this dude he's lower rank than me") Phone Post 3.0
