I Got Rid of My Cell Phone (Minimalism)

In an effort to denounce unnecessary possessions, I have gotten rid of my cell phone. Well, the truth is that it stopped working but I am not getting it fixed nor am I getting a new one.

Here's a cool article on someone else doing the same. "You can do anything and get past any initial frustrations."

And yes, messing around on the internet at work for a bit is kind of counter-productive to my cause but I'm weening myself off that too slowly. haha

Don't hold your breath for an answer....

He's trying to ween himself off all this nonsense...

lol. GL with life.

So if you don't have a cell phone or internet access how are you going to post here?

SLOtownG - Why are you choosing to do this?

Good question. This excerpt from the article I posted in my OP sums up my reasoning:

"I want to get rid of unnecessary distractions so I can be more productive, focus on what’s most important, and better enjoy my life. More importantly, I want to see what effect this change will have on my psyche. Every change I’ve made has had a profound effect on the way I see my life—my perspective today is radically different than yesterday’s perspective.

My lack of a telephone also means my face-to-face interactions with my friends will become more meaningful. Dinner or coffee or a walk through Dayton will mean so much more because we won’t have the luxury of updating each other with every banal detail of our lives via text message or a five-minute phone call. Every interaction will be an opportunity for us to live in the moment, to be on the mountain.

But what about emergencies? Truth be told, I can’t possibly plan for every emergency. It’s fear that makes us try to plan for every potential pothole. My neighbors have a phone if I really need one. My local coffee shop has Internet when I need to get online. My friends will still be able to contact me via email. I’ll still be able to update social media when I’m on the Internet."

I'm not going to never go on the internet again. I mean, I have to for work, paying the bills, etc., so I will be around; just much more infrequently. Giving up my cell phone is first on the agenda though. I think overinteracting with people can be toxic over time. I'd prefer meeting with friends and family sparingly and therefore having an enhanced experience as a result, if that makes sense.

I also got myself a manual transmission Honda FIT a year ago. It's awesome. I hated it at first but I love paying half at the pump and having more parking spaces.

From another person that got rid of their cell phone:

"Aside from the great sense of freedom, I learned a number of things about myself and changed my relationship to my device and the world at large. My biggest lesson? People will wait. I used to check my email right when I came out of a yoga class or the second I stepped out of the subway—trying to walk down 7th Avenue and answer messages right away.

While I was untethered, I was not so immediate in my responses and I received not one complaint or mention of it. In fact, I disappeared to a meditation retreat for a week where there was no Internet. It took a bit of time to catch up when I got back online, but no one mentioned my lag in response time.

Which leads me to the second point, which is that in reality, there are few things in life that are truly urgent. We get caught up in the belief that everything needs to happen asap—the immediacy of our connected world. The reality is, if there is no blood, it can likely wait.

Being untethered also gave me the opportunity to look at my life without the blinders that my device had actually become. I was reminded that what's happening in front of me is infinitely more engrossing than any device. (To think that I had been missing so many of the rich details of the people around me because I was distracted by a world that was not in front of me!) This shift in my thinking made me very intentional and present in all of my communication.

In addition to being more present in my communication, I also became more present with myself. I had been traveling alone—and although I met many wonderful people along the way—I had a lot of meals and time alone. I always thought I was comfortable in my own skin, but the value of comfortably dining alone, sitting without a device to be distracted by was an incredibly freeing and stretching experience."

Lol @ no cell phone. Might as well ride a horse and churn your own butter gramps. Phone Post 3.0

SLOtownG - Interesting, so it's personal social experiment. Do you think you will be more happy and positive? Are you going to feel inconvenienced? Do you think this will be permanent?

I will be inconvenienced in the beginning. Just today, I thought to myself, "Crap, I used that thing for directions!" But I will try to wing navigating on my own for a while and maybe get myself a simple GPS system, or whatever they're called, for long trips (I like traveling to Montreal, Maine, etc.).

If I DO cave in and get my cell phone back, I promise to post here about it. After all, I'm human and may succumb to my desires. :( I hope not though...

I was without my cell phone for six days a couple of months ago it sucks for the first day but I swear I felt so much better with less weighing on my mind each day not having to keep up with my phone. People just need to find a balance.

'But what about emergencies? Truth be told, I can’t possibly plan for every emergency. It’s fear that makes us try to plan for every potential pothole.'

I understood until this point. Dude is just talking in circles. There are people that plan for every emergency and they are reached via technology. Ideals won't mean a lot after a car accident, etc.

Cell phone is #1 go to for deuce dropping entertainment. I'm not going back to books, mags, or newspapers. No way Jose. Phone Post 3.0

I like Minimalism, but I need a phone.

Good for you. Maybe wither yourself down with one of those simplistic phones that's only a phone/texting machine.
