I need Weight loss help

Ok so I have let myself go and it's time for me to make a change I am 5'10" and weigh 240 when I got out of the army I was at 175 I need to get back there. I need to know the best diet/workout/supplements anything. I never been to a gym and I just need to know the easiest way of dropping this weight fast. I don't eat alot usually a small lunch and small dinner. Thanks for any suggestions you might have Phone Post

Also can someone suggest a typical weeks worth of meals Phone Post

Best diet.

Eat veggies, fruit and lean meat.

How much to eat? Divide your plate into 4 sections. Fill 1/2 your plate with fruits and veggies. Fill 1/4 of your plate with lean meat. Fill the remaining 1/4 of the plate with a potato of your choice. If you're in doubt, then eat more fruit and veggies.

Workout.

1-2 days of strength training.
1 day of sprints (optional).
3 days of walking level cardio.
1 day of rest.
seek Physician approval if you're in really bad shape

Supplements.

A multivitamin.

Since you've never been to a gym, I would stick to body weight stuff (same things you did in the Army) or hire a personal trainer to teach you how to squat, press, dead-lift and etc.. You might consider going to a Crossfit box. Lots of them have on-ramp programs that teach you the basics of all the core lifts. You can then go lift on your own or stay with Crossfit if you like it. Once you have the basic lifts down, you can do classic 5x5 programs with a 2 day lifting schedule. Look up "Starting Strength" to get some ideas.

Thanks guys I appreciate all the help Phone Post

Leigh - 240 and you don't eat much? You need to overcome your denial first. Then stop eating processes food and starches. Also knock off the booze Phone Post

I don't eat much it's just all fast food or junk and I don't drink that often I just never needed to care about what I ate and I let myself go Phone Post

Well, there you go then.

Body fat levels are directly proportional to insulin levels. Insulin levels are directly proportional to the excess sugar entering your blood, which is directly proportional to sugar/carbohydrate intake.

Start to wean your body off the junk food. Replace the (high GI/toxic) sugar with (lower IG/less toxic) complex carbs, then replace the complex carbs with fruit. While you are doing this, increase your intake of healthy fats, vegetables and meat.

Try to get into a negative caloric balance during this - either eat less than your current energy expenditure requires or eat the same amount and exercise to increase energy expenditure.

Do that and your insulin production will start to bottom out and you will start to burn body fat instead of storing more of it. Science.

MarsMan - I think this could be a little more detailed, as fruit (like ripe bananas, melons) can also have a high GI. Wouldn't a serving of oatmeal be better than a serving of apples?

Well, yes, some fruits are higher GI than others. Also, modern fruits are selectively grown for increased sugar content. Bananas are a man-made fruit, so that may explain why they are so high in sugar. It will also explain why they are a known allergen - the "Frankenfoods" are nearly all common allergens.

So, choose wisely.

As for oatmeal, I personally don't recommend it. It's not going to be as bad as shite like wheat, but it is known to cause problems in the human gut due to the proteins in it, one of them being similar to gluten IIRC.

Oats are a grass/grain, and I wouldn't recommend eating grass/grains because humans are not: -

1. Birds
2. Insects

-----------

This is simply my point of view - I am not an expert and I don't try to suggest I am.

You don't need conjecture when you have empiricism, and I think there is wealth of empirical knowledge about what our species is evolved to consume as food as well as clear links between certain "foods" and certain health problems, a lot/all of which cannot be explained otherwise.

I actually find that interesting Leigh. Providing I am eating clean (i.e. paleo, which is really the only "clean" diet), there are very few things I eat which I notice affect me differently. Apples are one of them - I seem to have more energy when I eat a lot of them. The only other 2 I can think of are: -

1. Protein - the times when I have eaten a fair bit more of it, I feel stronger whether I am exercising or not.

2. Almonds - I've got pretty good skin generally but my skin is noticeably smoother the day after I eat a load of almonds or almond butter. I've never noticed the same thing from eating any other type of nut/seed.

None of those things was I ever looking for. Take that FWIW.

Google Warrior Diet and Lean Gains, intermittent fasting has been to the only diet I have been able to stick too and seen the fastest results. Don't worry about supplements most are overpriced and a rip off.

For best results I would combine cardio and weights.

Here is the workout that transformed my body

5x5 Squat
10 minutes low impact cardio
5x5 Bench Press
