So they just had the Sydney open over the weekend. A large amount of the categories only had 1 competitor. Do they get a medal? And do their points count to the team tally?
I don't know about the Sydney open specifically; but those have counted at past IBJJF tournaments
You get a medal even if you're the only guy in your division, but I don't believe any points are accrued for the "win".

I believe this is the correct answer.. you medal and they say "go sign up for the open" but im fairly certain you do not receive team points..
they get a samurai sword but it is not sharpened
Hywel Teague - I was at a tournament 2 weeks agoThat really stirs me up. Pushes me towards physical violents. I don't except any medal I didn't WIN a match for. If you do. Your a fucking hack.
Someone rocks up, puts their gi on, goes and weighs in. Walks straight over the to podium as there's nobody else in the category. Big grin across their face as they pose for pics with teammates, coaches etc. You know that's going to be plastered all over social media later that day in a desperate bid for approval and recognition
I know this happens all the time but to watch it all unfold in front of me was incredible.

Meant to be violence :-)
Saw one guy at the Sydney open standing on the 1st place position despite taking silver (no other competitors on the podium). All over Facebook

ozjiujitsu -What the shit. My team mates would tear me apart if I tried to pull that shitCraftyHobo - Saw one guy at the Sydney open standing on the 1st place position despite taking silver (no other competitors on the podium). you get the gold medal but no points.
and its not even real gold. I took a couple to the local pawn shop and they laughed at me. I was so embarassed....
I was in a three man division recently and both my opponents chose not to weigh in.
In this case I received team points.
If you start out as the only person in registration then no team points.
You got ranking points either way I believe.
My instructor accepted a gold medal in his weight/age/rank division at the Sydney Open as the only entrant. He also won the World Masters for his division last year (after fighting several rounds) so he's no hack. He told me he wanted all the points he could get.
I got second in a two man division, losing on points - I wouldn't have done that disrespectful shit with the podium.
If you're prepared to fight but no one else your age/size/rank has the balls to sign up, IMO that's a win, you beat all the eligible guys who didn't enter. If you fight and lose and there's only two/three in your division, same applies and you deserve whatever medal you get.

I know that is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

But in my eyes if you compete and lose. You don't get or "deserve" anything. You lost. That's that. No participation. Lost. You are right in the fact that you have gained a moral victory in you had the balls to step on the mat. And you definitely deserve respect for giving it a crack. BUT YOU LOST!! And as far as nobody in your division and collecting a medal? Fuck me dead. Have some self respect. Points for your team, I can see. Putting that medal in the cupboard with all the ones you have (supposedly) sweat and fought for???? No thanks.

Competing in anything over masters 2 is a waste of time.
^.....we'll have to agree to disagree. I compete in master 3. I've only ever gotten one medal for being they only one being in my division. I didn't like it & & I didn't boast or brag about winning my division. I still got two matches in the open division & won both of those. I compete against my peers, others my age. It's insane to think that a 43 year old brown belt, me, I'd the same as a 23 year old brown belt. We might be as technical sound the same, but youth is something else. I have a lot of miles on my body from wrestling as a kid & the past 13+ years I've been training for mma, then bjj. I'll continue to compete against the other gritty old men. I'm fine with that, so is my professor

Totally agree. I'm 60, fought a guy who was 56. Suggesting I fight in Master 2 against guys who could be 20-25 years younger would not just be a complete waste of time per dojostormer, it would be borderline insane.
Should I not compete at all if an opportunity like this arises?
Gigante entered at Master 3. Not sure if he picked up his division medal or not.

That is most definitely not a fucking win. I hate hearing that shit. That is showing up and no one else did nothing more.

Props for keeping with it at 60 though man. I wouldn't face the young guys either at 60. I'm 42 and go with the adults locally so I can get the most matches but at an ibjjf event I'd probably stick with my age group.
